Brushes, Rollers & Trays

Paint brushes, rollers, and trays are the everyday tools of industrial maintenance painting — from touching up machinery and steelwork to full coating applications on buildings, plant, and equipment. Having the right applicator for the job affects finish quality, coverage rate, and overall paint consumption. AIMS Industrial supplies a range of painting tools suited to maintenance and industrial coating tasks across Australia.

Paint Brushes

Brushes remain the most versatile paint applicator — they can reach into corners, along edges, and around fittings that rollers cannot access. The key choice is between synthetic and natural bristle.

  • Synthetic (nylon/polyester) brushes: Suited to water-based paints and coatings. Nylon bristles hold their shape well in water-borne products and do not swell. Available in a range of widths from 25 mm to 100 mm+.
  • Natural bristle (pure bristle) brushes: Better suited to solvent-based paints, oils, and varnishes. Natural bristle absorbs solvent-based products more effectively and delivers a smooth finish. Not recommended for water-based paints as the bristles absorb water and lose their spring.
  • Wire brushes: Not for applying paint — used for surface preparation, removing rust, scale, and old paint prior to coating application.

Paint Rollers

Rollers cover large flat surfaces quickly and efficiently, making them the preferred tool for painting walls, floors, and large structural surfaces. Roller selection centres on the nap (pile depth) and the frame width.

  • Short nap (4–6 mm): For smooth surfaces — plasterboard, sealed concrete, smooth metal. Produces a fine finish with minimal texture.
  • Medium nap (10–13 mm): General purpose. Suits slightly textured surfaces and is the most common choice for maintenance painting on walls and steelwork.
  • Long nap (18–25 mm): For rough or heavily textured surfaces — masonry, concrete block, pebbledash. Gets paint into the voids in the surface.

Roller Frames and Handles

Standard roller frames accept 230 mm (9") or 180 mm (7") rollers. Extension handles thread into the frame end and allow painting of high surfaces without a ladder — faster and safer for large floor and wall areas. Heavy-duty frames with a rigid cage design prevent roller slump at the ends, producing a more even finish edge-to-edge.

Paint Trays

Roller trays hold paint for roller loading and allow excess paint to be rolled off the sleeve before application. Standard plastic trays are inexpensive and disposable. Metal trays are more durable for heavy-duty use. Tray liners are available to reduce clean-up time — fit the liner, paint from it, then discard the liner rather than washing out the tray itself.
