Carbide burrs — also known as rotary files or die grinder burrs — are solid tungsten carbide cutting tools used in die grinders, air grinders, flexible shaft machines and pendant drills to remove material, deburr edges, blend weld toes, shape profiles and clean up casting flash in metal workpieces.

Choosing the Right Carbide Burr

Carbide burr selection depends on the profile required for the job, the shank size, the cutting direction and the workpiece material.

• Profile Selection: Cylindrical burrs suit flat surfaces and right-angle corners. Ball-nose and oval burrs are used for curved and concave profiles. Tree-shaped and tapered burrs are used for angled and tapered surfaces. Flame-shaped burrs suit curved surfaces and internal blending. Always match the burr profile to the geometry of the surface being worked.
• Shank Size: Standard die grinder collets accept 6mm (1/4") and 3mm (1/8") shanks. Confirm the collet size on your die grinder before selecting a burr. 6mm shank burrs suit heavy-duty work; 3mm shank burrs suit detail work in restricted access.
• Cut Direction: Single-cut (spiral) burrs cut on one helix direction, producing a coarser chip and faster material removal. Double-cut (cross-cut) burrs cut on both helix directions, producing finer chips, a smoother surface finish and less vibration. Double-cut is preferred for most metalworking applications.
