Camlock types explained

Type A is a male adaptor with a female BSP or NPT thread machined into the back — screw it onto a threaded pump or tank outlet and it presents a male camlock face ready for a Type C or Type D coupler. Type B is the reverse: a female coupler with a male thread, used where the threaded fitting is the inlet rather than the outlet. Type C is a female coupler with a hose shank (hose tail) — by far the most-ordered configuration, as it's what goes on the end of a length of hose. Type D is a female coupler with a female thread on the back, used to camlock into an in-line threaded joint. Type E is a male adaptor with a hose shank, so a Type C on one hose and a Type E on another lets you join two hose ends directly. Type F is a male adaptor with a male thread — handy for adapting a threaded male outlet so it can take a female coupler.

The Type AA spool adaptor is male on both ends, letting you connect two female couplers back-to-back — useful in manifolds, tanker loading racks and anywhere two hose lines need to be joined without an intervening length of hose. DC dust caps and DP dust plugs aren't a connection type at all — they seal off an unused adaptor or coupler to keep contaminants out and protect the cam arms and seal face when a line isn't in use.

Material options

Camlock fittings live or die on whether the material suits the fluid, the environment and the mechanical duty. AIMS stocks:

  • Polypropylene (PP) — lightweight and chemical-resistant, the standard choice for agricultural chemicals, fertilisers and mild acid or alkali transfer where metal fittings would corrode.
  • Aluminium — the general workhorse material: lightweight, cost-effective and suited to fuel, oil, water and general industrial fluid transfer, including irrigation and tanker work. A conductive aluminium option is also stocked for fuel and solvent transfer where static dissipation matters.
  • Stainless steel (304/316) — used where corrosion resistance, hygiene or marine duty is required. 316 is the standard for food-grade, pharmaceutical, chemical and coastal or offshore applications; 304 appears on some accessory items such as strainers and pull rings.
  • Brass — a solid all-rounder for water and general workshop service, also supplied as replacement cam handles, rings and pins for rebuilding worn couplings.
  • Bronze (sand cast) — corrosion-resistant and non-sparking, typically specified for marine service or where ferrous fittings aren't suitable.
  • Nyglass (glass-reinforced nylon) — a tougher, more chemical-resistant alternative to standard polypropylene, stocked across AAP and Dixon adaptors, couplers, caps and plugs.

Carbon steel also appears in the range, but only on accessory hardware — cam arm clips, pull rings and lanyards — not on the coupling body itself.

Sizing

Across the AAP and Dixon ranges, AIMS stocks camlock fittings from 15 mm (1/2") through to 150 mm (6"), covering the sizes used across most Australian industrial, agricultural and tanker fluid-transfer setups. Polypropylene couplers top out around 75 mm (3"); aluminium and stainless steel extend further, up to 150 mm (6") on select types. AAP fittings are sized in imperial BSP/NPT increments (1/2", 3/4", 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 2", 2-1/2", 3", 4", 6"); Dixon's cam & groove range is sized in metric equivalents. Always match size to size, not just type to type — a Type C and Type E only mate correctly when they're the same nominal size.

Standards and interchangeability

There's no single mandatory Australian Standard covering camlock fittings. In practice, the dimensions that make Type A–F couplers interchangeable between manufacturers worldwide trace back to a shared industry lineage: the cam and groove design originated from the US federal specification (originally MIL-C-27487, now A-A-59326), and the equivalent European dimensional reference is EN 14420-7, commonly cited alongside the older DIN 2828. Reputable manufacturers — AAP and Dixon included — build their standard Type A–F ranges to these shared dimensions, which is why couplers of the same type and size generally seat correctly regardless of brand. What is a camlock fitting used for?

Camlock (cam and groove) fittings are used to make and break fluid-transfer connections quickly, without tools — connecting hoses to tanks, pumps, drums and IBCs. They're standard equipment wherever a line needs to be connected and disconnected regularly, such as tanker loading, chemical decanting, irrigation and workshop fluid transfer.

What's the difference between a Type C and Type D camlock fitting?

Both are female couplers, but they connect to different things on the back end. A Type C has a hose shank, so it's fitted to the end of a hose. A Type D has a female thread, so it screws directly onto a threaded male fitting instead of a hose. Get these mixed up and the coupler won't connect the way you expect.

Are AAP and Dixon camlock fittings interchangeable?

Generally yes — both brands build their standard Type A–F range to the same widely used cam and groove dimensions, so a given type and size from either brand will typically mate correctly. The exception is Dixon's 68° groove series, engineered for compatibility with certain international tanker systems — check the groove profile before mixing that series with standard-profile fittings.

What common problems come up with camlock fittings?

The usual culprits are worn or missing cam arm pins and rings (the coupling won't lock securely), perished or incorrect seals (leaks at the joint), thread damage on threaded types from cross-threading, and corrosion or chemical attack when the wrong material has been used for the fluid. Most of these are fixed with replacement seals or cam hardware rather than a whole new fitting.

Aluminium, brass, stainless or polypropylene — which material do I need?

Match the material to the fluid and the environment. Polypropylene suits chemicals, fertilisers and mild acids. Aluminium is the general-purpose choice for fuel, oil and water. Stainless steel 316 is for food-grade, pharmaceutical, chemical and marine service. Brass and bronze suit water and general workshop use, with bronze preferred where corrosion resistance or non-sparking properties matter. Can I use aluminium camlock fittings with any chemical?
