• Idler Sprockets: Idler sprockets guide and support the chain return run, maintaining chain tension across long unsupported spans. Available for standard ANSI and BS chain pitches — the idle sprocket tooth form and pitch must match the operating chain.
• Chain Tensioners: Mechanical and spring-loaded chain tensioners maintain constant chain tension as the chain wears and elongates — reducing the frequency of manual chain adjustment. Adjustable tensioner arms and tensioner sprockets in standard pitch configurations.

Chain Drive Accessory Selection Guide

• Tensioning vs Regular Adjustment: Manual chain tensioning is adequate for low-speed, low-duty drives with infrequent maintenance access. Automatic spring tensioners are preferred for high-duty, high-speed, or hard-to-access drives where manual adjustment would not be performed frequently enough to maintain correct chain tension.
• Chain Guide Material: Standard polyethylene guides suit general industrial applications. Food-grade UHMWPE and nylon guides are required for food contact conveyors. Metal chain guides are used for high-temperature environments above the rating of plastic materials.
• Idler Position: Idler sprockets should be positioned on the slack side of the chain drive — placing an idler on the tight side increases tension in an already high-load section of the chain, reducing fatigue life.
