Decking Screw Selection — Quick Reference
Decking screws — COUNTERSUNK + SELF-DRILLING for hardwood + softwood + composite deck boards. Specifically designed to draw board tight + sink flush without splitting. Australian decking + outdoor framing applications.
| Decking Screw Type | Best For |
|---|---|
| 304 Stainless Decking Screw | General outdoor + treated pine |
| 316 Stainless Decking Screw | Coastal + marine + saltwater spray |
| Class 4 Galvanised | Treated pine + indoor framing only |
| Square Drive (SQ2/SQ3) | No cam-out + powered driver |
| Torx Drive (T25/T30) | Maximum torque + production work |
| Self-Drilling Tip (Type 17) | Hardwood + no pre-drill |
| Common Sizes (8g x 50mm-75mm) | Match to board thickness + grip |
Critical: Use 316 STAINLESS for coastal + treated hardwood (ACQ-treated timber accelerates corrosion of plain galv). Pre-drill hardwood near board edges to prevent splitting. Counter-sink head ~2mm below surface. Brands: Bremick, Hobson. Companion: screws, self-drilling screws, stainless fasteners.
Decking Screws
Decking screws are purpose-designed for securing timber and composite decking boards to treated pine or steel frame substructures. AIMS Industrial stocks decking screws in stainless steel (316 grade) and treated pine compatible finishes for residential, commercial and coastal deck construction across Australia.
Why Decking Screws Differ from Standard Screws
Standard countersunk screws are not suitable for exposed timber decking. The exposure to moisture, timber movement through seasonal expansion and contraction, and — in treated pine applications — the corrosive effect of the CCA (copper chrome arsenic) or ACQ treatment on mild steel fasteners all demand a purpose-designed fastener. Decking screws are manufactured in corrosion-resistant materials (stainless or appropriately coated), with thread geometry and shank design that accommodate timber movement without loosening or splitting, and head profiles that pull flush without face splitting.
Thread and Drive Options
Decking screws are available with coarse thread for softwood and treated pine, and with a smooth shank below the thread to allow the surface board to float slightly with seasonal movement without cracking. Drive options include Torx/star drive and square drive, which provide better bit engagement and reduce cam-out compared to Phillips — important for the high-torque driving required into hardwood decking. Self-drilling tips eliminate pre-drilling in treated pine.
Stainless vs Coated Steel
Type 316 stainless steel is specified for coastal areas, treated pine and commercial projects where long-term corrosion resistance is non-negotiable. Coated (Climacoat, Duracoat) carbon steel screws are a cost-effective alternative for inland, low-exposure applications.
