Screws — Socket Cap, Machine, Self-Tapping, Grub & Nylon Screws

AIMS Industrial stocks a comprehensive range of screws across multiple grades, materials and drive types — covering 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel, Grade 12.9 high-tensile alloy steel, zinc-plated mild steel and engineering nylon. The range spans metric, imperial (UNC/UNF) and BSW (British Standard Whitworth) thread forms in socket cap, button head, countersunk, pan head, self-tapping, self-drilling and grub (set) screw configurations.

Screws are the most widely specified threaded fastener in industrial manufacturing, machine building, maintenance and construction. The correct selection — by material grade, thread form, head profile and drive type — determines joint strength, corrosion life and how the fastener performs under load, vibration and environmental exposure. AIMS supplies engineers, maintenance teams, fabricators and trades across mining, agriculture, food processing, marine and general industry.

We sell screws from Hobson, Bremick, Bumax, Inox World, GJ Works, SOKO & Champion — trusted brands in fastener supply to Australian industry.

Socket Head Cap Screws

Hex socket (Allen key) cap head screws are the standard internal-drive fastener for machinery, jigs, fixtures and fabricated steel assemblies — used wherever a spanner cannot access the fastener head. Hobson supplies a broad range of metric socket head cap screws for Australian industrial and trade use.

The Metric Hex Socket Cap Head Screw — 304 Stainless Steel covers general corrosion-resistant applications. The Metric Hex Socket Cap Head Screw — 316 Stainless Steel is specified for marine, coastal and chemical environments where chloride resistance is required. For maximum strength, the Metric Socket Head Cap Screw Grade 12.9 Zinc Finish and Grade 12.9 Plain Finish are high-grade alloy steel rated to 1,200 MPa tensile strength — significantly stronger than Grade 8.8 — suited to high-stress tooling, clamping and precision mechanical assemblies where maximum preload and joint rigidity are critical.

Button Head & Countersunk Socket Screws

Button head socket screws provide a low-profile domed head for panels and assemblies where clearance above the surface is restricted. The Metric Button Socket Head Screw — 304 Stainless Steel and 316 Stainless Steel cover stainless applications; the Metric Button Head Socket Screw Grade 12.9 Zinc and Grade 12.9 Plain Finish extend the range to high-strength alloy. Countersunk socket screws sit flush with the fastened surface — the Metric Countersunk Socket Head Screw in 304 SS, 316 SS and Metric Flat Head Socket Screw Grade 12.9 Zinc cover flush-surface fastening across stainless and high-tensile alloy grades.

Machine Screws — Phillips & Metric

Phillips pan head and countersunk machine screws require a pre-tapped hole or mating nut, and are the standard fastener in sheet metal, panel assemblies and light structural work. Bremick and Hobson supply machine screws across metric and BSW thread standards. We stock:

Self-Tapping & Self-Drilling Screws

Self-tapping screws cut their own thread into the host material on installation — used in sheet metal, thin aluminium, plastics and fibreglass without pre-tapping. Self-drilling screws (tek screws) drill and tap in a single pass, suited to metal roofing and light steel framing.

Grub (Set) Screws

Grub screws are headless fasteners driven flush by hex key — used to secure gears, pulleys, couplings and collars onto shafts, and for fine positional adjustment in mechanical assemblies. The Metric Hex Socket Set (Grub) Screw — 304 SS and 316 SS cover the most common shaft-locking and positioning applications in corrosion-resistant grades. For imperial thread requirements in legacy and imported plant, the Workshop Buddy Imperial Grub Screw Kit (450 pieces) provides a broad selection of 5/32″ through 3/8″ × 1/2″ grub screws in a single cabinet kit.

Nylon Screws

The Metric Hex Head Set Screw DIN 933 Natural Nylon is specified for electrical enclosures, electronic assemblies and chemical environments where metallic fasteners would cause interference, galvanic corrosion or contamination. Nylon (polyamide) screws are non-conductive, lightweight and chemically resistant to most acids and solvents, and will not corrode in the presence of water or humidity. DIN 933 designates the fully-threaded hex head form.

Specialty & Premium Stainless Grades

Bumax supplies premium high-performance stainless steel fasteners exceeding standard 316 SS specifications — suited to critical applications in marine, offshore and food-processing environments where standard A4-70 stainless is insufficient. Inox World provides a broad stainless fastener range including A2 (304) and A4 (316) metric screws across multiple head profiles. SOKO offers standard-grade metric fasteners suited to general engineering applications where a cost-effective stainless option is required.

Assortment Kits

Assortment kits from Champion reduce procurement time and keep a broad size range on hand for maintenance and repair:

How to Select the Right Screw

Grade and material: 304 SS for most engineering and indoor/outdoor applications; 316 SS for marine, coastal and chemical environments; Grade 12.9 alloy for maximum-strength mechanical assemblies; Bumax for critical stainless applications exceeding standard specifications; zinc mild steel for dry indoor use where corrosion resistance is not required.

Thread form: Confirm metric, imperial (UNC/UNF) or BSW before ordering — mixing thread standards is a common source of thread damage and joint failure.

Drive type: Socket (hex key) drives are preferred for high torque and recessed access; Phillips drives suit general assembly work.

Machine screw vs self-tapping: Machine screws require a pre-tapped hole or nut; self-tappers form their own thread in softer materials. Check material hardness and thickness before specifying self-tappers in steel.

Standards: Grade 12.9 fasteners comply with ISO 898-1. DIN 933 designates fully-threaded hex head screws. Stainless grades 304 (A2) and 316 (A4) are defined under ISO 3506-1.
