Lock & Spring Washers
Split spring washers, internal and external tooth (star) lock washers, in zinc-plated and stainless steel, from Hobson, Bremick, Champion and Inox World. These give moderate anti-rotation resistance and — for tooth washers — a reliable low-resistance electrical earth path in switchboard and cabinet work. Wedge-Lock & Conical Safety Washers — Nord-Lock & Schnorr
Where a spring or tooth washer isn't reliable enough, we stock two purpose-built systems. Nord-Lock wedge-lock washers use a cam-face pair — the cam angle exceeds the bolt thread lead angle, so the joint can't rotate loose even under severe vibration; they're supplied in matched pairs in 316L stainless. Schnorr conical spring (disc-spring) safety washers, including the Type S serrated safety washer, maintain constant clamp preload as the joint cycles through vibration and temperature change. A mudguard washer has a significantly larger outer diameter relative to its bore than a standard flat washer, giving extra bearing area over soft, thin or damaged material — sheet metal repair, rubber panel fastening and similar jobs. The same washer goes by different names depending on where you learned your trade: penny washer and fender washer are common alternative names for the same style of washer in general trade use. Choosing the Right Washer
Just spreading load? A standard flat washer is the default — step up to a hardened or structural washer under a high-tensile (Grade 8.8/10.9) bolt, or a large/Supa washer over soft or oversized-hole material.
Worried about vibration? A split spring or tooth washer gives modest resistance for general work. For a safety-critical or severe-vibration joint, specify Nord-Lock or Schnorr rather than relying on a spring washer alone.
Sealing a fitting? Copper and Dowty (bonded seal) washers are built to deform and seal, not to distribute structural load — never substitute one for a structural flat washer.
Marine, coastal or washdown environment? Specify 316 stainless throughout, and never mix stainless washers with plain or galvanised steel bolts in a wet environment — the dissimilar metals set up galvanic corrosion.

What is a washer used for?
A washer sits between a bolt head or nut and the surface it's fastened to. Depending on the type, it can spread clamping load over a wider area, resist the joint loosening under vibration, provide electrical earthing, or seal against fluid leakage at a fitting.
What's the difference between a flat washer and a lock washer?
