Insulator Washers for Electrical Isolation and Assembly

Insulator washers provide electrical isolation between fasteners, components, and panel structures in electrical assemblies, switchboards, panel builds, and electronic equipment manufacturing. They prevent current flow between metal fasteners and conductive surfaces, protect components from grounding faults, and isolate circuits that must not share a common ground path. AIMS stocks insulator washers in a comprehensive range of materials, sizes, and configurations for electrical, electronic, and light engineering assembly applications across Australian industry.

Nylon Insulator Washers

Nylon (PA66) insulator washers are the most widely used type in general electrical assembly and panel building. Nylon provides good electrical insulation properties, adequate mechanical strength for most assembly applications, and resistance to common industrial fluids and cleaning agents. Flat nylon washers insulate the fastener bearing face from the conductive surface. Shoulder washers combine a flat washer face with an integral sleeve that fits inside the clearance hole, providing both bearing face isolation and shank isolation in a single component — simplifying assembly and reducing part count compared to using separate flat and sleeve insulators. Glass-filled nylon variants are available for applications requiring higher mechanical strength or elevated temperature performance.

Fibre and PTFE Washers

Vulcanised fibre washers offer higher compressive strength than standard nylon, making them suitable for higher-clamping-force applications where nylon would deform under the fastener load. Fibre washers are widely used in transformer, switchgear, and high-voltage equipment assembly. PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) washers provide the highest electrical insulation resistance of common washer materials, along with excellent chemical resistance and very low friction that prevents galling and facilitates disassembly after extended service. PTFE washers are specified for demanding electrical, chemical processing, and high-purity applications where nylon or fibre performance is inadequate.

Selection Considerations

Insulator washer selection requires consideration of the required dielectric strength, compressive load from fastener clamping, operating temperature range, and chemical environment. Standard nylon and fibre washers are adequate for most industrial panel building and general electrical assembly at normal operating temperatures. For elevated temperature applications, glass-filled nylon or phenolic materials offer better performance. Always verify that the washer through-hole diameter is sized to accommodate the fastener shank without metal contact — even a small contact area defeats the insulating function and can create a ground fault path that is difficult to locate later.
