Speed clips versus circlips — when to choose which

Circlips need a precision-machined groove on the shaft and provide secure, removable retention rated for higher loads. Speed clips push onto a smooth shaft, grip by friction, and provide cheaper but lower-rated retention. For load-bearing applications and repeatable disassembly, use circlips (and the matching circlip pliers). For low-load, single-assembly applications, speed clips and push-on retainers are the right choice.

Materials and finishes

Most retaining washers are spring steel with a zinc-plated or black-oxide finish — adequate for indoor and protected applications. Stainless steel options are available for marine, food-grade, and corrosive environments. For very small or precision applications, beryllium copper provides a non-magnetic alternative.

Sizing — match to shaft diameter

Speed clips are sized by the shaft diameter they fit. Standard sizes range from 3mm through 25mm in metric, with imperial sizes also available. The clip's bore is slightly smaller than the nominal shaft diameter — friction does the work. Star washers are similarly sized by the shaft they grip.
