Choosing a lock washer
Internal tooth washers have their teeth on the inner edge, so the teeth sit under the screw head or nut. External tooth washers have their teeth on the outer edge. Either type bites into the surface it sits against, which helps resist loosening under vibration. Champion lists electrical earthing connections and automotive panels as typical uses for its star washers.
Pick the material to suit the environment. Zinc plated steel suits general workshop and indoor use. Inox World lists A2 (304) stainless steel as suitable for indoor and sheltered outdoor use, and recommends A4 (316) for marine, coastal and outdoor applications where corrosion resistance matters most. Match the washer to the fastener: Inox World also advises pairing stainless washers with stainless fasteners to avoid galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals.
A tooth washer is a general-purpose anti-loosening aid. For severe vibration or safety-critical joints, talk to us about Nord-Lock washers or a Loctite thread locker.
