Choosing a flat round washer
Start with the bolt size and the material. Stainless steel suits corrosive conditions, hot dip galvanised and zinc plated mild steel suit general outdoor and indoor use, and nylon and polypropylene suit light duty and non-metallic applications. Copper, aluminium and brass washers are listed for sealing and softer contact surfaces.
Washer size matters as much as material. Standard washers, large Supa washers and extra large washers give progressively more bearing area under the head or nut. For high clamp loads, look at the hardened Sampson, H9 impact and load washers, which are listed with their hardness ratings, and match the washer to the bolt grade.
