Schnorr Safety Washers
Schnorr is a German-engineered brand of safety washers used widely in Australian engineering and maintenance work where bolted joints must resist loosening under vibration. AIMS Industrial supplies the Schnorr range to fitters, mechanical engineers, and maintenance teams who specify locking washers for joints that conventional spring or split washers can't reliably hold.
How Schnorr washers work
Schnorr washers are conical (Belleville-style) with serrations on both faces. As the bolt is tightened, the washer flattens slightly and the serrations bite into the bolt-head bearing surface and the joint material. The combination of the conical spring force and the bidirectional serrations provides a friction lock that resists loosening from vibration far better than standard spring or star washers — without the bulk and clamping-force loss of a Nord-Lock-style wedge washer.
The Schnorr range at AIMS
- Schnorr serrated safety washers — the original conical safety washer, in metric sizes M3 to M30 and beyond
- Schnorr "S" series — standard safety washers for general use
- Schnorr "VS" series — heavy-duty version for higher clamping loads
- Stainless steel and surface-treated options — for corrosive environments and specific application requirements
Where Schnorr earns its place
Specified where vibration is constant, where the joint must remain serviceable for disassembly, or where Nord-Lock-style washers are oversized for the application. Common uses across Australian industry include pump and motor mounts, machinery base bolts, vehicle chassis fastenings, and HVAC plant. The cost is modest against the cost of a single fastener loosening in service.
