Bugle head screws are self-drilling dry wall and general purpose screws with a distinctive curved (bugle) head profile that drives smoothly flush with or slightly below the surface of plasterboard, MDF and timber without tearing the material face. Bugle Head vs Countersunk Head

The bugle head's curved transition between the shank and the head face distributes seating pressure across a larger area as the screw drives home — particularly important in plasterboard, where a standard sharp-angled countersunk head would tear through the paper face rather than pulling it slightly below the surface. This makes bugle heads the standard specification for drywall and plasterboard fixing, where a neat, undamaged surface is required before stopping and painting.

Thread and Point Options

Bugle head screws are available in coarse thread (for timber battens, framing and MDF) and fine thread (for metal stud drywall framing) configurations. Self-drilling points eliminate the need for a pilot hole in timber and light metal stud; needle point versions suit soft plasterboard-to-plasterboard fixing. Lengths range from 25mm to 100mm for common structural and lining applications.

Phosphate-coated (grey) bugle head screws are the standard for internal drywall and timber applications. For external, wet area and coastal environments, type 316 stainless steel bugle head screws provide long-term corrosion resistance.
