Types of M8 Screws

M8 socket head cap screws (ISO 4762 / DIN 912, 6 mm hex key drive) are the primary engineering screw at M8 — a cylindrical head with internal hex drive delivering high clamp loads in a compact, recessed profile. They are specified for machine building, hydraulic manifold covers, fixture plates, tooling, press tools, robotic end effectors, and precision assembly wherever a projecting bolt head is undesirable. M8 countersunk socket screws (ISO 10642) flush-mount into countersunk holes in panels and plates. M8 button head socket screws (ISO 7380) offer a low domed profile for panels and aesthetic assemblies. M8 set screws / grub screws (ISO 4026/4027/4028/4029) are fully threaded, headless screws used to lock shaft-mounted components including couplings, hubs, pulleys, and collars — the dominant M8 screw type in power transmission applications. M8 machine screws in pan head and countersunk head with Phillips or slotted drive are used for panel assembly, enclosures, and general sheet metal work. Materials and Property Classes

Class 12.9 M8 socket cap screws are the engineering standard — 1,220 MPa tensile strength, 1,100 MPa yield strength, black oxide finish. This is significantly stronger than a Grade 8.8 bolt and the correct specification for most machine-building applications where space is limited and clamp load matters. Class 10.9 M8 socket screws (1,040 MPa tensile) are an intermediate step. Class 8.8 M8 screws are available in zinc-plated finish for general-purpose use. M8 stainless steel screws — A2-70 (304 stainless) and A4-80 (316 stainless) — are the standard for corrosive, marine, food-processing, pharmaceutical, and outdoor applications. Stainless socket cap screws are property class A2-70 or A4-70 — lower than Class 12.9 but entirely appropriate for most corrosive-environment applications. Apply anti-seize compound when installing stainless screws into stainless tapped holes to prevent galling. Brass M8 screws are used in electrical and plumbing applications. Black oxide M8 screws provide a clean, dark finish with mild corrosion resistance for machinery and optical instrument assembly.

Thread and Dimensional Data

Standard M8 coarse pitch: 1.25 mm. Fine pitch M8×1.0 is available for vibration-sensitive applications in thin materials or where finer torque control is needed. Socket cap screw head diameter: approximately 13 mm; head height: 8 mm; hex key drive: 6 mm. Stock lengths: 6 mm to 150 mm. Set screw lengths: 4 mm to 60 mm. Minimum thread engagement for full rated load: 8 mm in steel, 12–16 mm in aluminium or cast iron.

Choosing the Right M8 Screw

For engineered fastening into tapped holes, specify Class 12.9 socket cap screws — the extra strength over Grade 8.8 is significant at M8 and costs little more. For corrosive environments, A4-80 stainless is the correct choice — always use anti-seize on stainless-into-stainless assemblies. For set screws, select point style based on shaft: dog-point for positioning on a flat; cup-point for general-purpose shaft locking; cone-point for a permanent, high-torque lock on a soft shaft; flat-point for soft or hollow shafts. Use the correct 6 mm hex key — an worn or undersized key at Class 12.9 tightening torques will damage the socket. Always verify tightening torque from the fastener manufacturer's data.
