Types of M6 Screws

M6 socket head cap screws (ISO 4762 / DIN 912) are the most specified M6 screw in engineering and industrial applications — a cylindrical head with a 5 mm internal hex (Allen key) drive, used wherever a clean, high-torque, recessed installation is required. They are the dominant fastener in machine building, tooling, fixture design, and precision assembly. M6 countersunk socket screws (ISO 10642 / DIN 7991) sit flush with or below the surface and are used in panels, guards, and housings where a projecting head would obstruct. M6 button head socket screws (ISO 7380) have a low, domed head for aesthetic applications and panels where minimal protrusion matters. M6 pan head machine screws with Phillips or slotted drive are used in electrical panels, enclosures, and general sheet metal assembly. Materials and Property Classes

M6 socket cap screws are most commonly supplied in Class 12.9 — the highest standard property class for socket screws (1,220 MPa tensile, 1,100 MPa yield), offering significantly higher clamp loads than Grade 8.8 hex bolts of the same size. They are typically black oxide finished (dark grey/black) for mild corrosion resistance and a clean appearance. Class 8.8 M6 socket screws are available in zinc-plated finish. M6 stainless steel screws in A2-70 (304) and A4-80 (316 stainless) are the correct choice for outdoor, marine, food-processing, chemical, and corrosive environments — note that stainless socket cap screws are typically A2-70 or A4-70/A4-80 property class. Brass M6 screws are used in electrical panels, plumbing fittings, and where non-magnetic fasteners are required. Black oxide M6 screws are common in optical instruments, camera equipment, and any application where appearance matters.

Thread and Dimensional Data

Standard M6 coarse pitch: 1.0 mm. Fine pitch M6×0.75 is available for precision and instrumentation applications. Socket cap screw head diameter: approximately 10 mm; head height: 6 mm; hex key drive: 5 mm. Standard stock lengths: 5 mm to 100 mm. For set screws, lengths run from 3 mm to 50 mm. Thread engagement for full rated load: minimum 6 mm in steel (1.0×D), 9–12 mm in aluminium (1.5–2.0×D).

Applications

M6 socket cap screws are found everywhere in industrial machinery — securing axis covers, motor flanges, gearbox housings, tool holders, fixture plates, and machine guards. M6 grub screws are universal in power transmission — every shaft collar, timing pulley, and small coupling on a drive system almost certainly uses them. Choosing the Right M6 Screw

Match the drive type to your installation: socket cap for high torque and recessed access; countersunk for flush finish; button head for low-profile aesthetics; set screw for shaft locking. Match the material to your environment: Class 12.9 black oxide for maximum strength in dry, sheltered conditions; A4 stainless for anything wet, salty, or chemical. For set screws on hardened shafts, specify a cupped-point or cone-point to prevent shaft damage; flat-point set screws are used on soft shaft materials. Always use the correct hex key size (5 mm for M6 socket screws) — an undersized key will round out the socket.
