Diamond Saw Blades for Tile, Masonry, Concrete & Stone

Diamond saw blades cut through hard, abrasive materials that would destroy a standard toothed blade in minutes. The cutting action is grinding rather than shearing — diamond particles bonded into a metal matrix on the rim wear the material away. This makes diamond blades the only practical option for tile, masonry, concrete, natural stone, fibre cement, terrazzo, ceramic and other mineral-based materials.

Rim types — when to use each

The rim profile of a diamond blade determines its cutting characteristics:

  • Continuous rim: An unbroken diamond-impregnated edge. Gives the cleanest cut with minimum chipping — used for ceramic tile, porcelain, glass and where edge finish matters. Slower cut rate than segmented blades.
  • Segmented rim: Diamond segments separated by gullets. Maximum cut rate and best heat dissipation — used for hard concrete, brick, paving and demolition. Coarser edge finish than continuous rim.
  • Turbo rim: Serrated continuous rim with cooling notches. Balances cut speed and edge quality — versatile general-purpose choice for stone, masonry and brick.

Wet vs dry cutting

Wet cutting uses water to flush debris, cool the blade and suppress crystalline silica dust. Wet-rated blades have softer bonds optimised for cooled operation. Dry cutting blades have harder bonds and built-in airflow gullets to dissipate heat. Always check the blade specification — running a wet-only blade dry damages the bond and shortens life dramatically.

Silica dust — the AU compliance issue

Cutting concrete, stone, tile and fibre cement generates respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust. Australian workplace exposure standards (Safe Work Australia 0.05 mg/m³ over 8 hours) require dust control on any cutting operation that generates RCS. Wet cutting plus on-tool extraction is the standard control hierarchy. Operators must wear at minimum a P2 respirator for any silica-generating work.

Blade sizes and saws

AIMS stocks diamond blades to suit angle grinders (100 mm, 115 mm, 125 mm), circular saws (185 mm, 235 mm) and tile saws (200 mm, 250 mm). Brands include Austsaw, Bordo TradeCut and other established Australian-distributed ranges. For wood and metal cutting, see the standard saw blade range or cutting wheels.
