Idler positioning: idlers can run on the INSIDE of a V-belt (V-section idler in the groove direction) or the BACK of a V-belt (flat flanged idler). Idler pulleys serve two distinct but equally critical functions in belt drive system design and maintenance.

The first function is belt tension maintenance — V-belts elongate progressively over their service life as the fibre cords in the belt tension member experience creep under repeated load cycling, and as this elongation reduces belt tension, belt slip against the drive sheave increases, power transmission efficiency falls, and the belt heats through friction at the slip interface in a deteriorating cycle that ends in belt failure.

A correctly adjusted idler pulley restores the tension to the specified range and restarts the service life clock for the belt tension without requiring adjustment of the fixed sheave centre distance.

The second function is belt path geometry control — in drive arrangements where the required belt wrap angle on the small sheave cannot be achieved with a direct drive geometry due to centre distance and sheave size constraints, an idler pulley redirects the belt path to increase the wrap angle on the drive sheave, increasing the maximum torque the belt can transmit before slip. V-belt idler pulleys must match the belt section profile (A, B, C, or 5V) precisely to seat the belt in the groove correctly — a mismatched idler causes the belt to ride on the groove sidewalls rather than seat in the correct bearing position, causing premature belt edge wear, groove flank deformation, and early belt failure.
