Durasquirt washers are EPDM rubber-bonded metal sealing washers designed for use with self-drilling roofing and cladding screws. The EPDM rubber seal compresses under the screw head as it drives home, creating a weatherproof seal at every fixing point to prevent water ingress through the screw hole — essential for long-term performance of metal roofing and wall cladding in Australian conditions.

Why Sealing Washers Matter in Roofing

A self-drilling roofing screw driven directly through steel roofing sheet without a sealing washer leaves an exposed metal hole around the screw shank — a direct path for water ingress under the capillary action of driven rain, and a point of accelerated corrosion where dissimilar metals contact. Over time, this leads to roof leaks, rust staining and premature sheet deterioration. A Durasquirt washer with its moulded EPDM seal compresses against the roofing sheet surface, forming a watertight cap over the penetration that remains effective throughout the design life of the roof.

EPDM Durability

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubber is specified for roofing sealing washers because of its outstanding UV, ozone and weathering resistance — critical for exposed roofing applications in the Australian sun. Unlike neoprene and natural rubber, which harden and crack under prolonged UV exposure, EPDM maintains its elasticity and sealing performance throughout the service life of the roof fixing, typically 20 years or more in standard Australian conditions.
