Epoxy + Structural Adhesive Selection — Quick Reference

Structural epoxy adhesives create permanent + load-bearing bonds across steel + aluminium + cast iron + composites + engineered plastics. Used where mechanical fasteners alone insufficient or where seal + bond combined required. Devcon + Loctite + Epirez workshop standards.

Epoxy Type Best For Cure / Service
Devcon Plastic Steel (5min / 30min) Metal repair + filling — castings + machinery 5min set / full cure 24h
Devcon Plastic Steel Putty Heavy fill + machinable after cure Hand-mixed putty consistency
Loctite Hysol Structural Adhesive High-load structural bonds — metal + composite Various working times
Loctite EA 9460 (Toughened) Vibration + dynamic load — impact-resistant epoxy Heavy industrial structural
Epirez Heavy-Duty Epoxy Civil + structural + concrete repair AU brand — civil + maintenance
Underwater Epoxy (Wet-Cure) Marine + submerged + wet-surface repair Cures in presence of water
High-Temp Epoxy (200°C+) Exhaust + high-temp service Temperature-resistant formulation
Slow-Cure Epoxy (24-48hr) Large assemblies + extended work time Long working time
Fast-Cure Epoxy (5min) Quick repairs + production Set 5min full cure 1-4 hr

Critical: Match epoxy CURE TIME to job — fast-cure for quick repairs; slow-cure for large assemblies needing repositioning. Surface prep MANDATORY — clean + dry + abraded substrate. Cured strength typically 20-30 MPa shear — comparable to lower-grade fasteners. Don't substitute for high-load structural fastening where AS standards require certified mechanical fasteners. Brands: Devcon, Loctite, Epirez. Companion: adhesives + sealants + tapes, Loctite, epoxy adhesive guide, industrial adhesive types.

Epoxy & Structural Adhesives

Structural epoxy adhesives create permanent, load-bearing bonds across a wide range of substrates including steel, aluminium, cast iron, composites and engineered plastics. AIMS Industrial stocks structural epoxy systems from Devcon and Loctite, used in manufacturing, maintenance and construction for applications where mechanical fasteners alone are insufficient or impractical.

How Structural Epoxies Work

Two-part epoxy structural adhesives consist of a resin and a hardener that are mixed in a defined ratio immediately before application. Once mixed, an exothermic chemical reaction begins — the pot life (working time) before the mix gels typically ranges from 5 minutes to 30 minutes depending on formulation. Full structural strength is typically reached within 24 hours at room temperature.

Loctite Structural Epoxies

Loctite's EA (Epoxy Adhesive) range covers fast-cure and standard-cure formulations for general fabrication, repair and assembly bonding. Loctite EA 9492 and similar systems deliver high tensile and shear strength with gap-filling capability for bonding parts that cannot be machined to a close fit. Dual-cartridge packaging and static mix nozzles eliminate measuring errors and ensure consistent mix ratios on every application.

Devcon Structural Adhesives

Devcon's two-part epoxy systems include the 5-Minute Epoxy for fast-set repairs and assembly, and the Plastic Welder for bonding ABS, polycarbonate and other engineering plastics. Devcon's HP250 and Flexane systems extend the range to flexible and shock-resistant bonding applications on rubber, polyurethane and soft substrates.

Applications

Structural epoxies are used for metal-to-metal bonding in structural assembly, repair of castings and fabricated components, bonding inserts into composite panels, and anchoring studs and fasteners into concrete or metal when mechanical drilling is not preferred.
