Use of Eye Pads in Workplace First Aid

A sterile eye pad is used to cover an injured eye to protect it from further contamination, reduce movement that might worsen an injury to the eye itself, and apply gentle pressure where a wound dressing is appropriate. Eye pads are not treatment for the underlying injury — they are a first aid covering applied after initial management (including eye irrigation where chemical exposure has occurred) and before medical assessment. The injured person should be transported to medical care promptly after the eye pad is applied; eye injuries deteriorate rapidly without appropriate treatment.

Eye Irrigation First Aid

For chemical splash injuries, immediate and prolonged irrigation with clean water is the first priority — before applying an eye pad. Eye wash stations with continuous supply (at least 10 minutes of flow) are required in workplaces where chemical splash risk exists. Portable eye wash bottles provide an immediate response where a fixed eye wash station is not accessible. First Aid Kit Compliance
