Fibre Discs
AIMS Industrial stocks resin-fibre grinding discs for angle grinders from Pferd — durable abrasive discs for heavy stock removal, weld dressing and surface blending on steel, stainless and non-ferrous materials. Fibre discs are the workhorse abrasive for angle grinder grinding work, delivering faster stock removal than flap discs and a more controllable cut than depressed centre grinding wheels.
Zirconia vs Aluminium Oxide
Zirconia alumina fibre discs are the premium choice for demanding grinding applications — stainless steel, hardened steel and tough alloys. Zirconia is a self-sharpening abrasive: as the grain dulls under cutting load, it fractures to expose a fresh sharp edge, maintaining aggressive cutting action throughout the disc life. This self-fracturing characteristic makes zirconia discs the more economical choice on difficult materials where aluminium oxide would glaze and require more pressure to cut effectively. Aluminium oxide fibre discs are the standard workhorse for mild steel, cast iron and general stock removal — cost-effective and widely compatible with all common grinding applications.
Grit Selection
Fibre disc grit determines the balance between stock removal rate and surface finish. Coarse grits (24–36) provide maximum stock removal for heavy weld dressing and scale removal. Medium grits (40–60) balance removal rate with surface finish for general grinding and blending. Fine grits (80–120) are used for pre-paint surface preparation and finish grinding where surface texture matters. Starting with a coarse grit and stepping through to a finer grit is the standard approach for quality surface finishing work.
Sizes and Mounting
Fibre discs are stocked in 100mm, 115mm and 125mm diameters to suit common angle grinder sizes. All fibre discs require a backing plate — AIMS stocks matching backing plates in the corresponding sizes. The disc mounts to the backing plate with a centre nut and washer assembly on the grinder spindle. Using the correct backing plate size for the disc diameter is essential for safe operation and consistent grinding performance.
Applications
Weld bead removal and surface cleanup, scale and rust removal on structural steel, paint stripping and surface preparation before coating, radius blending and contoured surface finishing, and edge breaking on castings are the primary uses for fibre discs. On fabricated steelwork headed for painting or powder coating, fibre discs are used to remove mill scale, weld spatter and surface contamination and leave the substrate profile specified by the coating system. Fibre discs are also used extensively in sheet metal work to remove burrs and sharp edges before assembly. AIMS stocks Pferd fibre discs in zirconia and aluminium oxide grades across multiple grit levels and common angle grinder sizes.
