High temperature bearings are engineered to keep running in environments where standard bearings fail. The breakdown point for a conventional bearing is largely determined by its grease and seals — standard greases typically begin to degrade above 120°C, causing premature bearing failure in ovens, kilns, furnaces, dryers, and steel mill equipment. High temperature bearings solve this by combining heat-stable steel alloys, high-temperature grease compounds rated to 250°C or higher, and metal-shielded or open configurations that eliminate rubber seals — which are the first component to fail under sustained heat.
Types and Ratings
The AIMS high temperature bearing range covers deep groove ball bearings and insert bearings (Y-bearings) rated for continuous operation from 250°C to 270°C. Metal-shielded variants (suffix /C3 or /C4 internal clearance) are the standard choice for most high-heat applications, as the larger internal clearance compensates for thermal expansion of the inner and outer rings. Open bearings (no shield or seal) packed with specialised high-temperature grease are used in the most extreme environments where re-lubrication access exists. Standard rubber-sealed bearings should never be substituted — the seal material will fail rapidly above 120°C, contaminating the lubricant and accelerating wear.
Lubrication Considerations
Even a high temperature bearing requires the right grease. Standard lithium-complex greases are suitable to approximately 150°C. For sustained service above that, specify a grease with a silicone, PTFE, or perfluoropolyether (PFPE) base — these maintain viscosity and do not carbonise at elevated temperatures. Re-lubrication intervals should be shortened significantly in high-heat applications, as grease oxidation accelerates with temperature.
