Imperial Machine Nut Taps

Buy Imperial Machine Nut Taps Online in Australia

Machine nut taps are long-shank tapping tools designed for production nut manufacture. The shank is purpose-built to hold a stack of finished nuts as they're threaded — the tap drives through each nut blank, the finished nut exits up the shank, and the next blank enters at the cutting end. A continuous-feed setup that turns out hundreds of nuts per cycle.

AIMS stocks Sutton and Goliath imperial machine nut taps across BSW, UNC and UNF — typically the popular nut-making sizes from 1/4" to 1".

Imperial Machine Nut Tap Selection — Quick Reference

Imperial machine nut taps — LONG-SHANK machine taps for NUT MAKING + production. Cut UNC + UNF threads in nut blanks. Workshop fastener manufacturing + service. Heavy production-grade construction + extended thread reach for nut depth.

Imperial Machine Nut Tap Type Best For
UNC (Unified Coarse) Standard imperial coarse pitch
UNF (Unified Fine) Fine pitch nut production
HSS Standard Workshop steel + brass
Cobalt Premium (M35/M42) Stainless + tough material
Extended Shank Deep nut blank reach
2-3 Flute Production Faster cycle
1/4" - 1-1/2" Range Standard nut sizes

Critical: Use CUTTING FLUID — see cutting lubricants. UNC + UNF NOT interchangeable. Brands: Sutton Tools, P&N. Companion: metric machine nut taps, taps, imperial hand taps, threading.

How a Nut Tap Works

The tap shank is long enough to hold 20-50 finished nuts. As the tap rotates and feeds through a nut blank, the freshly cut nut slides up onto the shank. Once the shank fills, the operator removes the stack, and continues. Productivity is much higher than tapping nuts one at a time.

Some setups use a bent-shank nut tap that bends 90° at the back, so finished nuts fall off automatically into a bin — fully unattended operation.

When You'd Use One

  • Manufacturing nuts in volume — fastener producers, fabricators making proprietary hardware.
  • Restoration work where matching-pitch imperial nuts aren't available off the shelf.
  • Specialty thread forms (like BSF on heritage British machinery) where buying nuts is harder than making them.

Common Questions

What size nut tap do I need for M-something? Machine nut taps in this collection are imperial only (BSW/UNC/UNF). For metric nut taps, ask us directly — we source them on order.

Do I need a special tapping machine? For best results yes — a dedicated nut tapper. But standard drill presses, lathes and CNC machines can run nut taps with the right collet and clearance behind the work.

Can I order custom thread forms? Yes. Sutton makes special-order taps to most imperial standards. Call us with the thread spec.
