Insulated Screwdriver Selection — Quick Reference (IEC 60900 / AS/NZS 4575)

Insulated screwdrivers — VDE-CERTIFIED 1000V INSULATION for ELECTRICAL work. AS/NZS 4575 + IEC 60900 safety standard. ESSENTIAL for live electrical work — protects operator from shock. Workshop + electrician + maintenance.

Insulated Driver Type Best For
VDE 1000V Slotted Flat tip + electrical work
VDE 1000V Phillips Cross-head + electrical
VDE 1000V Pozidriv European + electrical
VDE 1000V Torx Maximum torque + electrical
VDE 1000V Hex / Allen Cap screw + grub + electrical
VDE Mixed Set Comprehensive electrician
Stubby VDE Tight access electrical
Wiha / Stahlwille / Knipex Quality Workshop electrical reliability

Critical: VDE certification MANDATORY for live electrical work. Inspect insulation REGULARLY — cracks / chips compromise protection. AS/NZS 4575 + AS/NZS 3000 compliance. Brands: Wiha, Stahlwille, Knipex. Companion: screwdrivers, electrical, safety.

Insulated screwdrivers are individually tested to handle live electrical work up to 1,000 V AC / 1,500 V DC. The handle and shaft (except the very tip) are encased in a two-layer insulating coating, and each tool is dielectrically tested at 10,000 V to certify it for the 1,000 V working rating — the standard for AS/NZS 60900 and IEC 60900 (often marked "VDE").

When you need them

Any time you're working on or near live conductors — switchboard maintenance, distribution board work, motor and control panel servicing, instrumentation. SafeWork Australia and AS/NZS 4836 expect electricians and electrical workers to use properly rated tools for live work; uninsulated screwdrivers are not a substitute, even with rubber gloves.

What to check

  • Marked rating — look for the "1000V" stamp and the "double triangle" VDE / IEC 60900 symbol on the handle.
  • Tip geometry — slotted (parallel and tapered), Phillips, Pozidriv and Torx all sized to the screws you encounter.
  • Inspection — check coating integrity before each use. Any nick, split or crack in the insulation = retire the tool.
