Isopropyl Alcohol for Industrial Cleaning and Electronics

Isopropyl alcohol (IPA, isopropanol) is a fast-evaporating, residue-free solvent widely used in industrial, electronics, and maintenance cleaning applications. Its combination of effective solvent action on oils, greases, fluxes, and adhesive residues with rapid complete evaporation and low toxicity compared to stronger solvents makes it one of the most versatile cleaning and surface preparation agents in industrial use. AIMS stocks isopropyl alcohol in a range of concentrations and packaging formats suited to industrial maintenance, electronics, and surface preparation applications.

Purity Grades and Selection

IPA is available in different purity grades for different applications. 99.9% (anhydrous) IPA is the standard for electronics cleaning, PCB flux removal, optical surface cleaning, and precision cleaning where the absence of water is critical. Water residue can cause corrosion of exposed metal contacts and create tracking paths on PCBs and connector bodies. 70% IPA (70% isopropanol with 30% water) is widely used for surface disinfection and general sanitisation, where the water content improves efficacy by slowing evaporation and extending contact time on contaminated surfaces. Industrial degreasing applications typically use 99% IPA for its stronger solvent action and faster drying time that prevents wetting of surfaces that must be immediately coated or bonded.

Electronics and Electrical Cleaning

IPA is the standard cleaning solvent for printed circuit boards, connectors, relay contacts, and electronic components. It effectively removes solder flux residues, fingerprint oils, and environmental contamination without leaving residue that could cause tracking or insulation breakdown issues. Apply with a lint-free cloth, foam swab, or specialised electronics cleaning brush and allow to dry completely before energising the circuit. Aerosol spray cans with precision nozzles allow targeted application on specific components without soaking the surrounding board area. Always use 99.9% anhydrous grade for electronics cleaning to avoid introducing moisture to sensitive components and connector contacts.

Surface Preparation

IPA is widely used as a surface preparation solvent before applying adhesives, primers, tapes, and coatings. Removing oils, fingerprints, mould release agents, and surface contamination with IPA before bonding or coating dramatically improves adhesion and long-term coating performance. In automotive refinishing, IPA wipe-down is a standard final pre-paint preparation step before applying topcoat. For adhesive tape applications, an IPA-cleaned surface ensures maximum initial tack and long-term bond integrity on both metal and plastic substrates.
