Jig Saw Blades for Timber, Metal & Composite Cutting

Jig saw blades are reciprocating cutting blades that pair with a standard jig saw to make curved, scrolled and plunge cuts in timber, sheet metal, plastics, laminates and composite materials. Blade selection is the single biggest factor in cut quality — the wrong TPI (teeth per inch) or tooth profile produces splintered edges, slow cuts, burnt material or blade breakage.

TPI selection — by material

Tooth count per inch (TPI) controls how the blade cuts:

  • 6–10 TPI: Fast cutting in timber, plywood and softwoods. Coarse finish, faster cuts.
  • 10–14 TPI: General-purpose timber, hardwood, MDF and laminates. Balanced cut speed and finish.
  • 14–20 TPI: Fine timber, sheet plastics, thin metal. Smoother cut, slower feed.
  • 20–30 TPI: Sheet metal, stainless steel, thin-wall tube. Fine cutting only.

The general rule: at least 3 teeth should engage the material at all times. Too few teeth grab and chatter; too many teeth clog and overheat.

Tooth profile — by application

Standard ground teeth give clean straight cuts in timber. Reverse-tooth blades reduce splintering on the top face — ideal for laminate, veneer and finished surfaces. Carbide-grit blades (no traditional teeth) cut abrasive materials like fibre cement, hardboard and ceramic. TCT (tungsten carbide tipped) blades handle stainless steel and harder alloys where bi-metal blades wear quickly.

Shank compatibility

The vast majority of modern jig saws use T-shank (Bosch-style) blades — universal across the major brands. Older saws may use U-shank (universal shank) blades — check the saw before ordering. AIMS stocks both shank types where the material range demands it.

For straight cuts — use a different blade

Jig saws are designed for curved and scrolled cuts. For long straight cuts, a circular saw with the right circular saw blade will give a faster, straighter, cleaner cut. For metal-only cutting at small volumes, a hacksaw is often more practical — see the Hacksaw Blade Guide for material selection and TPI choice.

Sutton — the standard AU brand

AIMS stocks the full Sutton Tools jig saw blade range — Australia's local cutting-tool brand with a comprehensive jig saw blade lineup across timber, metal, stainless, aluminium and TCT specifications.
