Step Ladders for Workshop and Facilities Use

Step ladders are the standard access tool for work at heights of two to four metres where a rigid, self-supporting platform is needed. Industrial step ladders are constructed to higher load ratings and more robust standards than domestic equivalents — a trade-quality step ladder will carry significantly more than the 120 kg rating of a household unit and will maintain structural integrity through regular daily use on an industrial site. Fibreglass step ladders are the correct specification for electrical work, eliminating conductivity risk that exists with aluminium ladders near live equipment. Aluminium step ladders are lighter and better suited to general maintenance work where electrical hazards are not present.

Extension Ladders

Extension ladders provide access to heights beyond the practical reach of step ladders — roof maintenance, elevated equipment, building facade work, and overhead structural access. Industrial extension ladders must be rated for the combined weight of the user and tools. AS/NZS 1892 is the relevant Australian standard for portable ladders; always confirm the duty rating of any ladder against the actual load it will carry. Correct ladder angle — the 4:1 rule (one unit out for every four units of height) — must be maintained for safe use of extension ladders against walls and structures.

Platform Steps and Work Platforms

Platform steps provide a stable, level standing surface at working height and are preferred over step ladders where extended work is being performed — working from a platform is more stable and less fatiguing than standing on a step ladder rung. Platform steps are widely used in warehouses, workshops, and maintenance facilities where staff need regular access to elevated storage, equipment, or structures at a consistent height. Locking step platforms with safety handrails are available for tasks requiring hands-free working at height.

Ladder accessories extend the safe working capability of the base equipment. Non-slip ladder feet improve stability on hard, smooth floors. Ladder standoffs hold the top of the ladder away from the wall surface, providing better stability when working near gutters, eaves, or fascias. Ladder levelling devices compensate for uneven ground and allow safe use on stepped surfaces. Regular inspection of ladder condition — feet, rungs, locking mechanisms, and frame — is essential maintenance for any ladder in regular service. Retire any ladder with cracked, bent, or damaged components.
