Lithium Grease for Industrial and Automotive Maintenance in Australia

Lithium grease is the most widely used general-purpose grease in Australian industry and automotive maintenance. Its lithium soap thickener gives it broad compatibility — it handles most plain bearing, wheel bearing, chassis, and general lubrication tasks without needing a specialist product for every application. AIMS Industrial stocks lithium grease from CRC, Anglomoil, Rocol, Molybond, WD-40, Morey's, and Dy-Mark in formats that suit both trade and workshop use.

Why lithium grease is the default choice

Lithium-based greases work across a wide temperature range (typically -20°C to +130°C), resist water washout better than calcium-soap greases, and are mechanically stable under moderate loads. For wheel bearings, chassis points, hinges, slides, electric motor bearings, and general industrial lubrication, lithium grease is appropriate without needing to calculate application-specific requirements. It's the grease in the red-top cartridge in most Australian workshops for good reason.

Lithium vs lithium complex

Standard lithium grease suits most general-purpose applications. Lithium complex grease uses a more sophisticated thickener chemistry to extend the upper temperature range to around 180°C and improve load-carrying capacity — useful for high-speed bearings, oven conveyor bearings, or automotive wheel bearings on heavily loaded axles. If you're unsure which is right, standard lithium grease is the safe default for most maintenance tasks.

Pack formats stocked

  • Aerosol cans — quick application to exposed joints, hinges, and sliding surfaces; useful where a brush or gun can't reach
  • Cartridges (400g / 450g) — standard grease gun size for chassis lubrication and bearing repacking
  • Tubs — for bench-side work, packing bearings by hand, and high-volume maintenance

Application notes

Do not mix lithium grease with calcium-soap, polyurea, or silicone-based greases — incompatible base oils can cause the mixture to soften or separate under heat, accelerating bearing wear rather than protecting it. When repacking bearings, remove old grease fully before applying new. Over-greasing causes heat build-up; a bearing should be packed two-thirds full, not completely full.

Standards and specifications

Industrial lithium greases are typically graded to NLGI 2 consistency (the standard for most bearing and chassis work) and tested against DIN 51818 or equivalent. Products stocked at AIMS meet Australian industry expectations for industrial maintenance and automotive service.
