Oil Dispensing Systems

An oil dispensing system gets workshop oil from the storage drum or bulk tank to the engine, gearbox, or hydraulic reservoir without spillage, accurate to the volume needed, and fast enough to keep service work flowing. The components — pump, hose reel, meter, dispensing gun — work together as a system; component-mismatched setups leak, foam, or drift on volume accuracy. What's in a typical workshop dispensing system

• Drum or tank pump — pneumatic or electric, sized for the oil viscosity and flow rate needed
• Filter and pressure regulator — to keep dispensed oil clean and at consistent pressure
• Hose reel — retracts oil hose out of the way between uses, prevents floor damage and trip hazards
• Volumetric meter — measures dispensed volume, often with preset or recording functions for fleet work
• Dispensing gun — hand-held trigger valve at the end of the hose, with rigid or flexible spout to suit fillpoint access

Sizing and selection

Three things drive the spec. Oil viscosity (engine oil is different from gear oil is different from hydraulic) determines pump type and pressure rating. Flow rate (gallons per minute, litres per minute) drives hose diameter and pump capacity. Distance and lift (drum-to-vehicle, ceiling-mounted reel down to ground level) affect pressure drop and pump sizing. A workshop dispensing engine oil from a 200L drum to a vehicle at the bay is a different spec from a fleet workshop dispensing gear oil from a bulk tank across a service bay.

Common configurations

• Drum-mounted — pump fits onto the bung of a 200L drum, hose reel mounted on a wall or column nearby
• Bulk tank — pump fitted to a 1000L+ tank, with multiple dispense points fed from a manifold
• Mobile — drum, pump, hose reel, and gun on a wheeled trolley for service work where the customer comes to the oil

Service and maintenance

Oil dispensing systems need routine maintenance to stay accurate. Filter changes (in the system, not the dispenser), seal replacement on guns and meters, and hose inspection for damage are the typical service items.
