Pipe joint sealants — choosing the right one

Anaerobic pipe sealants (Loctite 567, 577, and similar) cure in the absence of air between threaded surfaces — they fill the thread gaps, provide a leak-tight seal, and remain serviceable later for disassembly. PTFE-based sealants (paste-form) suit lower-pressure applications and threads that may need adjustment. PTFE tape is the everyday plumbing choice — wrap the male thread two to four times in the direction of tightening, ensuring the tape doesn't bunch into the bore.

Pipe repair compounds — when to use what

• Pinhole leaks in steel pipe — epoxy putty (Devcon Plastic Steel or similar) provides a quick patch that handles low-to-medium pressure
• Cracked plastic pipe — purpose-formulated PVC repair compounds, or cut-out and coupling replacement
• Larger leaks or split pipes — fibreglass-and-resin wrap kits provide a permanent repair when properly applied
• Emergency stops on pressurised lines — pipe repair clamps for the immediate fix while the proper repair is planned

Application practice

Most pipe sealing failures trace to surface preparation. Clean the threads (degrease or wipe down), apply the sealant or tape correctly, and tighten to manufacturer-specified torque. Don't over-tighten threaded fittings — that strips threads, distorts the fitting, and creates more leak paths than it seals.
