Pozidriv Screwdrivers
Pozidriv (PZ) screwdrivers drive Pozidriv-headed screws — a cross-head profile widely used in European-spec equipment, kitchen and cabinet hardware, machinery, and electrical fittings. Where the alternative is fighting Phillips screwdrivers that don't quite engage and cam out under torque, the right Pozidriv driver makes the difference between work that flows and work that fights you. AIMS Industrial stocks Pozidriv screwdrivers in the sizes and brands trade and industrial users actually need.
The Pozidriv sizes
- PZ0 and PZ1 — small screws for electronics, instruments, and fine assembly work
- PZ2 — the everyday workhorse for most #6-#10 wood and sheet metal Pozidriv screws
- PZ3 — larger Pozidriv fasteners, structural and #12+ screws
- PZ4 — uncommon but available for very large Pozidriv heads
Pozidriv versus Phillips — get the right driver
Phillips and Pozidriv look similar but are different profiles. A Phillips driver in a Pozidriv screw doesn't engage the locator ribs (those small marks at 45° between the cross arms), so it cams out under torque and damages the screw head. A Pozidriv driver in a Phillips screw doesn't seat cleanly because the geometry is wrong. Carrying both Phillips and Pozidriv drivers is the right approach — substituting one for the other costs more in damaged screw heads than the second driver does in purchase.
What separates a good Pozidriv driver
The tip geometry is the difference. Quality drivers have precision-ground tips that match the Pozidriv profile exactly — including the small locator ribs that make Pozidriv superior to Phillips. Cheap drivers often have stamped or imprecisely-ground tips that effectively make them Phillips drivers with a Pozidriv label, which is worse than a proper Phillips driver. Buy quality once.
Brands stocked at AIMS
Wiha and Stahlwille are the premium choices — German engineering, precision tip grinding, and lifetime quality. Bahco covers the trade range with sensible pricing on tools that hold up to daily use. All three brands deliver tip accuracy that holds up after extended use, handle ergonomics that work when hands are oily, and shaft hardness that doesn't twist or break under load.
VDE-insulated for electrical work
Where Pozidriv screws appear in electrical equipment (and they often do, particularly in European-origin gear), VDE-certified insulated drivers are mandatory for live or near-live work. The certification covers two-layer insulation, drop testing, and dielectric strength to 1000V. Don't substitute non-VDE drivers in electrical applications — the cost of getting it wrong is far greater than the price difference.
Set or singles
Pozidriv driver sets typically cover PZ0/PZ1/PZ2/PZ3 in matched handles. For most workshops, a set covers the daily-used range; singles let you replace the size that's seen the most use. Apprentices generally start with a set covering both Phillips and Pozidriv, plus slotted, and add specialty sizes as work demands.
