Slotted (Flat-Blade) Screwdrivers for Australian Trade and Electrical Work

Slotted screwdrivers — also called flat-blade or flat-head drivers — drive the traditional flat-slot screws still common on electrical terminals, traditional fasteners, and heritage equipment. Despite being the oldest screw drive, slotted is still the most common drive for electrical termination and many trade applications. Parallel-tip versus tapered-tip — when to use each

  • Parallel-tip (cabinet pattern) — the blade has parallel sides; sits flush in deep slots without binding on the slot walls. Standard for electrical terminal screws where the driver must seat against the screw head.
  • Tapered-tip (engineer's pattern) — the blade tapers to the tip; broader bearing surface higher up the blade gives better leverage on tight screws. Standard for general workshop and mechanical use.

Most electrical work calls for parallel-tip; most general workshop work uses tapered-tip. Both are essential in a complete kit.

Sizing — width × thickness × length

Slotted driver sizing has three dimensions: blade width, blade thickness, and overall length. Common sizes:

  • 3mm × 0.5mm × 100mm — small electronic and instrument work
  • 5.5mm × 1.0mm × 125mm — the everyday medium-screw size
  • 6.5mm × 1.2mm × 150mm — larger general-purpose work
  • 8mm × 1.6mm × 200mm — heavy-duty slotted screws

Width and thickness must match the screw slot — a driver too narrow won't span the slot, too wide cams over the slot edges, too thin twists, too thick won't seat properly.

VDE-certification for electrical work

For work near live electrical conductors, slotted screwdrivers must be VDE-certified to 1000V. The certification covers two-layer insulation, drop testing, and dielectric strength. Most modern Australian electrical work — terminal screws in distribution boards, switchboards, motor terminations — calls for VDE drivers as a matter of course. Don't substitute non-VDE drivers in electrical applications; the consequences of a slip are not worth the saving.

Why slotted drivers cam out

Slotted geometry doesn't naturally centre the driver in the slot — that's the historical reason Phillips and Pozidriv replaced slotted in many applications. To minimise cam-out: use a width that exactly fits the slot, apply firm axial pressure, and don't overtorque. For applications where slotted cam-out is regular, consider whether the fastener can be replaced with cross-head equivalents.
