A ring spanner's closed loop contacts the fastener head on all sides rather than just two flats, which spreads the applied torque more evenly and reduces the risk of rounding the corners of the nut or bolt head — a common failure with worn open end spanners or in high-torque applications. The trade-off is that a ring spanner must be lifted clear and repositioned on each stroke unless it's a ratchet ring type, whereas an open end spanner can sometimes be swung in from the side.
