How spring calipers and dividers differ from regular calipers

Regular vernier and digital calipers measure absolute dimensions directly with a numerical readout. Spring calipers and dividers don't measure directly — they hold a fixed dimension between the legs (set against a rule or master gauge) and transfer that dimension to the workpiece for marking, scribing, or inspecting. The advantage is precision in transferring; the limitation is that the dimension must be set before use and read separately.

Where each tool type earns its place

• Outside calipers — measuring shaft diameters where a regular caliper can't reach (e.g. shaft journals between shoulders)
• Inside calipers — measuring bore diameters in irregular or restricted-access workpieces

Sizing

Spring calipers and dividers come in various sizes from small (75-100mm) for detail work through large (200-300mm) for general workshop use. The size is the overall length of the tool. For toolroom work, smaller sizes give better precision; for general layout, mid-size tools are the workhorse.

Setting and using

Set the tool against a steel rule or precision gauge to the required dimension, lock the spring screw to hold the setting, then transfer the dimension to the workpiece. For dividers, walk the tool along the line being marked, leaving small punch marks at each step. For odd-leg calipers, ride the curved leg along the reference edge while the pointed leg scribes the marking line.

Care and accuracy

Spring calipers and dividers are precision tools. Store them in a roll, drawer divider, or proper case to prevent damage. The spring tension and leg geometry are critical — bent legs or weakened springs introduce errors that compound across the work. Wipe down after use, lightly oil the spring and pivot, and inspect leg geometry before relying on the tool for precision work.
