Taper Pipe Reamers for Australian Plumbing, Hydraulic and Industrial Pipework

Taper pipe reamers finish the tapered bore in pipe fittings — producing the precision taper that matches the pipe thread's taper for proper sealing. Used in plumbing fitting manufacture, repair work, and engineering applications where damaged taper bores need cleaning, taper pipe reamers are the right tool for restoring or producing accurate taper bores. AIMS Industrial supplies taper pipe reamers in BSPT and NPT standards from Sutton Tools, Bordo, and Champion.

How taper pipe reamers work

The reamer has a tapered cutting body matching the standard pipe thread taper (1:16 for BSPT, slightly different for NPT). As the reamer is rotated into a pre-drilled hole, the tapered cutting edges produce a precision tapered bore that matches the corresponding pipe thread. The result is a bore that accepts the matching pipe thread with proper full engagement — providing the metal-on-metal seal that tapered pipe threads rely on.

The taper standards we stock

  • BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper) — the most common Australian pipe thread taper; 1:16 ratio
  • NPT (American National Pipe Taper) — US-spec taper threads found in imported equipment; slightly different from BSPT

BSPT and NPT tapers are not interchangeable — confirm the standard before sourcing the reamer. Mismatched standards produce bores that won't seal properly.

Sizes

Taper pipe reamers are sized by nominal pipe size — 1/8 inch, 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch, 1-1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch, 2 inch and beyond. Match the reamer size to the pipe thread being produced or finished. The reamer typically has a square shank for hand wrench use; some reamers have Morse taper shanks for machine work.

Where taper pipe reamers earn their place

  • Pipe fitting manufacture — finishing the tapered bore before tapping the matching pipe thread
  • Repair of damaged tapered bores — cleaning out damaged or corroded taper threads
  • Workshop and toolroom work — producing accurate taper bores in custom fittings
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic system fabrication — making fittings to specific requirements

Reaming practice

Drill the hole to the correct starting size (smaller than the reamer's small end). Use cutting fluid (Tap Magic, threading oil) generously throughout the cut. Turn the reamer slowly by hand using a tap wrench or holder on the square end. Apply only the pressure needed to take a fine cut; forcing the reamer cuts oversize and leaves chatter marks. The reamer should bottom in the hole; the small end of the reamer determines the final taper start, the body of the reamer establishes the taper geometry.
