Pipe Threading System Selection — Quick Reference
Pipe threading systems — power + manual threading machines + ASADA + RIDGID + dies + thread cutting heads. NPT + BSP + BSPT threads for steel + stainless + copper pipework. Plumbing + irrigation + gas + hydraulic fabrication.
| Threading Tool Type | Best For |
|---|---|
| Manual Pipe Threader (Stocks & Dies) | Field + occasional + small bore |
| Power Pipe Threader (Stationary) | Workshop + production threading |
| Hand-Held Power Threader | Site + mobile production |
| Pipe Die Heads — see die heads | Multiple thread profiles |
| BSP / BSPT Thread Profile | UK/AU plumbing + gas standard |
| NPT Thread Profile | US + international pipe standard |
| 1/8" - 4" Pipe Range | Standard workshop range |
Critical: Use PROPER THREAD CUTTING OIL — preserves die life + improves finish. Match thread profile (NPT vs BSPT — NOT interchangeable). Clean burrs after threading. Brands: Asada. Companion: pipe threading dies, die heads, threading tools.
Pipe Threading Systems
A pipe threading system is the integrated set of dies, holders, ratchet handles, and accessories that turns pipe threading from a slow, awkward task into a manageable trade operation. For plumbers, gas fitters, and fabricators threading pipe by hand on site or at the workbench, the right system makes the difference between a clean thread in two minutes and a torn thread after fifteen. AIMS Industrial stocks manual pipe threading systems for trade and industrial use.
What's typically in a pipe threading system
- Die stock (handle) — the holder that drives the die through the pipe, with extension handles for leverage
- Ratchet die head — quick-action mechanism for back-stroke return without removing the die, much faster than non-ratcheting
- Replaceable die jaws — wear parts that cut the actual thread, replaceable when worn
- Pipe vice or stand — for holding the pipe rigidly during threading
- Threading oil and applicator — lubrication for the cutting action
- Carrying case — for storing and transporting the system
Manual versus powered threading
Manual threading systems suit occasional threading work, on-site repair, sizes up to about 1 inch, and situations where powered equipment isn't practical (no power, restricted access, single thread to cut). Powered pipe threading machines (see our Power Pipe Threaders range) are the workshop standard for production threading — they're faster, more consistent, and handle larger pipe sizes that hand threading struggles with.
Sizing the system
System ranges are typically specified by the largest pipe size they can thread. A 2-inch system covers 1/2 to 2 inch nominal pipe (the everyday plumbing range). Smaller systems (up to 1 inch) suit lighter work; larger systems (up to 4 inch) suit industrial pipe threading. Match the system to the largest size you'll routinely cut.
Threading practice
Cut the pipe square (use a pipe cutter, not a hacksaw, where possible — the cleaner cut produces better threads). Mount the pipe rigidly in a pipe vice. Apply threading oil generously to the pipe end. Engage the die head, apply pressure, and rotate steadily — let the die cut, don't force it. For tapered threads (BSPT, NPT), the thread is complete when the pipe end is approximately flush with the back of the die. For parallel threads, thread to the depth required by the fitting.
Brands stocked at AIMS
Pipe threading systems are stocked from quality manufacturers chosen for build quality and consistent threading performance. For specific brand or kit requirements, contact our team for current options and pricing.
Maintenance
Die jaws wear with use — symptoms are increasing torque required to thread, ragged thread surface, and visible chipping on the die teeth. Replace worn jaws rather than struggling with poor threads. Clean the die stock and accessories after each use — pipe threading produces oily, gritty swarf that grinds moving parts if it's left on the equipment.
