Tee nuts (also called T-nuts) are nuts with a flange and prongs or screws on one face, designed to be embedded into timber or panel material to provide a metal-thread fastener anchor in soft substrate. How pronged tee nuts work

The nut is positioned with the prongs facing the timber surface. The flange sits flat against the timber. Hammer blows on the flange drive the prongs into the timber, locking the nut in place. A bolt or screw threaded into the nut from the opposite side now has a metal thread to engage in the timber. The result is significantly stronger pull-out resistance than screwing directly into timber, with the ability to remove and refit the bolt many times without damaging the thread.

Sizing

Tee nuts are sized by the bolt thread they accept. Common metric sizes include M4, M5, M6, M8, M10. Imperial sizes from #6 through 5/16 inch are available. The flange diameter and length specifications determine the embedment depth in the timber and the bearing area on the surface.

Installation practice

Drill a clearance hole through the timber slightly larger than the nut's body diameter (so the body fits without binding) but smaller than the flange diameter (so the flange can't pass through). For pronged tee nuts, position the nut on the back side of the timber with prongs facing the timber, hammer blows on the flange drive the prongs home. For screw-in tee nuts, drill the appropriate pilot hole and screw the nut in using a hex bit or matching driver.
