Tee Nuts (T-Nuts) for Australian Furniture, Joinery and Panel Fastening

Tee nuts (also called T-nuts) are nuts with a flange and prongs or screws on one face, designed to be embedded into timber or panel material to provide a metal-thread fastener anchor in soft substrate. For Australian furniture manufacturers, joiners, and trade users assembling timber and panel products, tee nuts provide stronger fastening than screwing directly into timber, and allow the assembly to be disassembled and reassembled without thread damage. AIMS Industrial supplies tee nuts in the styles and sizes Australian trade customers actually need.

The tee nut types we stock

  • Pronged tee nuts (4-prong) — four sharp prongs that bite into the timber as the nut is hammered home; the everyday choice for timber assembly
  • Screw-in (helicoil-style) tee nuts — external thread that screws into a pre-drilled hole; suit dense timber and panel material where prongs would split the substrate
  • Adhesive tee nuts — flat-flanged nuts that bond into a counterbore with construction adhesive
  • Furniture tee nuts — finer thread and flange for delicate furniture assembly
  • Heavy-duty tee nuts — for structural timber work and load-bearing assemblies

How pronged tee nuts work

The nut is positioned with the prongs facing the timber surface. The flange sits flat against the timber. Hammer blows on the flange drive the prongs into the timber, locking the nut in place. A bolt or screw threaded into the nut from the opposite side now has a metal thread to engage in the timber. The result is significantly stronger pull-out resistance than screwing directly into timber, with the ability to remove and refit the bolt many times without damaging the thread.

Where tee nuts earn their place

  • Furniture assembly — panel-to-panel connections in flat-pack furniture, knock-down assemblies
  • Joinery — solid timber connections where threaded fasteners need to engage timber substrate
  • Cabinet making — adjustable shelf supports, drawer slide mounts, hardware attachment
  • Climbing wall and rope course construction — timber structures requiring strong removable bolt fastenings
  • Speaker cabinets and audio equipment — driver mounting and chassis assembly
  • General timber projects — anywhere a removable bolt connection is needed in timber

Materials and finishes

  • Zinc-plated steel — the everyday workshop choice for indoor assembly
  • Brass — for non-magnetic and decorative applications
  • Stainless steel 304 and 316 — for corrosive, marine, and food-grade applications

Sizing

Tee nuts are sized by the bolt thread they accept. Common metric sizes include M4, M5, M6, M8, M10. Imperial sizes from #6 through 5/16 inch are available. The flange diameter and length specifications determine the embedment depth in the timber and the bearing area on the surface.

Installation practice

Drill a clearance hole through the timber slightly larger than the nut's body diameter (so the body fits without binding) but smaller than the flange diameter (so the flange can't pass through). For pronged tee nuts, position the nut on the back side of the timber with prongs facing the timber, hammer blows on the flange drive the prongs home. For screw-in tee nuts, drill the appropriate pilot hole and screw the nut in using a hex bit or matching driver.
