Choosing a torch or headlamp

Output and beam: higher output suits outdoor and large-area work. For close inspection and confined spaces, lower output is easier to work with because a very bright beam causes glare. Coast's Pure Beam Focusing models let you change between a spot and a flood beam. The HL5 has a fixed utility beam.

Rechargeable or battery: a rechargeable headlamp costs less to run and means no spare batteries to carry. The Macnaught WL-HL500 gives you both options, with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery or 3 x AAA batteries (not included). The Hansa HHL-1B and the Eveready Dolphin are battery operated, which suits remote work where you cannot recharge. Check the product page for the power source of the other models.

Splash and dust protection: the Macnaught WL-HL500 is rated IP54 and the Maxigear MGLH75020 is rated IPX4 (splash proof). Match the rating to where you will use the light.

Hazardous areas: none of these lights is sold as Ex-rated. Do not use them in explosive atmospheres. Use certified Ex-rated lighting there.

Always check the manufacturer's data sheet before you buy.

Torches and headlamps — common questions

What is Pure Beam Focusing on a Coast headlamp?

It lets you switch the beam between a focused spot and a wider flood, so one headlamp covers both distance and close-up work.

Why choose a lower-output headlamp for confined space work?

In a small space a very bright beam bounces back and causes glare. A lower output of around 240 to 400 lumens is easier to see by up close. Save the higher-output models for outdoor and large-area work.

Which headlamp in the range is the brightest?

The Coast XPH34R is the brightest at 2075 lumens, followed by the Coast XPH30R at 1000 lumens and the Coast RL10R at 750 lumens.

Should I choose a rechargeable or battery-operated headlamp?

Rechargeable models are cheaper to run over time and you do not need to carry spare batteries. A battery-operated headlamp suits remote locations where you cannot recharge. The Macnaught WL-HL500 can run on either its rechargeable battery or 3 x AAA batteries.

What does the red rear lighting on the Coast RL10R do?

It adds red rear safety lighting to the 750 lumen main beam.

What do IP54 and IPX4 mean on a headlamp?

IP54 means protection against dust build-up and against splashing water. IPX4 means protection against splashing water, with no dust rating given. The Macnaught WL-HL500 is IP54 and the Maxigear MGLH75020 is IPX4.
