Wire Rope Ferrules for Australian Rigging and Wire Rope Termination

Wire rope ferrules are the metal sleeves swaged (compressed) onto wire rope ends to form permanent terminations — the engineered alternative to U-bolt grip clamps for wire rope eye splices and stop ends. Different from removable rope grips, ferrule terminations are permanent but stronger (typically 90-95% rope efficiency versus 75-85% for grip terminations). For Australian rigging professionals, wire rope manufacturers, and engineering applications requiring full-strength terminations, the right ferrule matched to the rope and the swaging equipment is essential. AIMS Industrial supplies wire rope ferrules for trade and industrial customers.

The wire rope ferrule types we stock

  • Copper ferrules — the most common ferrule material; soft enough to deform easily during swaging, hard enough to grip wire rope reliably
  • Aluminium ferrules — alternative to copper for marine and weight-sensitive applications
  • Stainless steel ferrules — for marine and corrosive environments where copper or aluminium would corrode
  • Stop sleeves (button stops) — for forming a stop end on wire rope (not a loop, just a thicker terminus)
  • Talurit ferrules — the original European ferrule design widely used in Australian rigging

How ferrule terminations work

The ferrule is positioned on the wire rope at the location where the termination will be formed. For an eye splice (most common), the rope is bent into a loop with the dead end passing back through the ferrule alongside the live end. The ferrule then has both rope strands inside it. A swaging press compresses the ferrule, deforming the soft ferrule material into the wire rope strands and locking the assembly together. The result is a permanent termination significantly stronger than mechanical grip terminations.

Where ferrule terminations earn their place

  • Wire rope sling manufacture — eye splices on lifting slings
  • Architectural cable installations — balustrade and structural cable terminations
  • Marine standing rigging — yacht and boat rigging cable terminations
  • Crane and lifting wire rope — terminations on crane wire ropes
  • Suspension cable systems — bridge, awning, and shade structure terminations
  • Industrial cable systems — guy wires, tensioned cables, and structural rigging

Ferrule sizing — match to rope diameter

Ferrules are sized to specific wire rope diameters. The ferrule's bore must match the rope diameter (with appropriate fit for the doubled-up section in eye splices). Common ferrule sizes:

  • 2mm, 3mm, 4mm — small wire rope for architectural and balustrade work
  • 5mm, 6mm — common rigging sizes
  • 8mm, 10mm, 12mm — heavier rigging applications
  • 16mm and larger — heavy industrial and lifting applications

Use ferrules sized for the specific rope diameter — undersized ferrules can't accommodate the doubled-up rope; oversized ferrules don't grip after swaging.

Swaging equipment

Ferrule swaging requires specialised swaging equipment:

  • Hand swagers — for small ferrules and occasional use
  • Bench-mounted swagers — for medium-sized ferrules and workshop use
  • Hydraulic swagers — for larger ferrules and production work
  • Industrial cable swaging machines — for heavy industrial and lifting wire rope

Each swager type is matched to specific ferrule sizes; using a hand swager on oversized ferrules produces inadequate compression and weak terminations. For workshops doing wire rope termination work, the swager must match the ferrule range.

Compliance — AS 3569

Wire rope used in lifting applications must comply with AS 3569 (steel wire rope). Ferrule terminations must be made by competent persons using appropriate swaging equipment and inspected after manufacture. For lifting slings, the complete sling assembly must comply with AS 4497 (round slings) or AS 3775 (chain slings) and be supplied with traceable test certificates.
