B-Safe Shock Absorbing Lanyard, 2 m Polyester Webbing, Snap Hooks (BL01112HD)

The B-Safe shock absorbing lanyard, code BL01112HD, is a 2 m single tail lanyard made from polyester webbing, with a heavy duty shock absorber and a double action snap hook at each end (manufacturer-stated). B-Safe's data sheet says the snap hooks are alloy with 16 kN rated gates, the shock absorber has an ultra clear mould resistant PVC covering, and the lanyard weighs about 2 kg (manufacturer-stated).

B-Safe's data sheet says it is for use with an approved full body harness, attached to the front or rear attachment point, and is designed to limit the force generated in a fall to under 6 kN. The data sheet states it is AS/NZS 1891.1 certified, while B-Safe's catalogue says its shock absorbing lanyards are made to AS 1891.5 (manufacturer-stated).

B-Safe's documents give different capacities for this lanyard. The catalogue gives a user weight range of 50 to 140 kg, the technical guide gives 136 kg for standard lanyards and 155 kg for high capacity ones, and the BL01112HD data sheet says 160 kg. Until AIMS confirms the rating for the lanyard supplied, treat 136 kg as the limit.

B-Safe's technical guide gives the foot clearance needed below a shock absorbing lanyard as free fall plus shock absorber extension plus a standard 1000 mm safety clearance, with 250 mm added for harness slippage. It lists shock absorber extension as 300 mm for a 600 mm free fall, 500 mm for 1000 mm, 600 mm for 1500 mm and 900 mm for 2000 mm, and says the maximum free fall before the shock absorber activates is 2 m (manufacturer-stated). Confirm the clearance for your own job before you choose a lanyard.

B-Safe's technical guide says to inspect fall protection equipment before each use, to check the date of manufacture and the remove from service date on the label, and to take any equipment that has been used to arrest a fall out of use and return it to the supplier for inspection and certification, or destroy it (manufacturer-stated).

Fall protection equipment must be selected, installed, used, inspected and maintained by trained people in line with the manufacturer's instructions and the relevant Australian Standards. Ask AIMS for the instructions and test certificates before you order, and never use it for any purpose other than the one it was made for.

Selecting the right option

Use the lanyard with a full body harness and connect the shock absorber end to a fall arrest point on the harness. Connect it to a full body harness that has a fall arrest attachment point, and to an anchorage that can take the load. B-Safe's technical guide says an anchorage for free fall arrest must withstand a minimum of 15 kN for one person and 21 kN for two (manufacturer-stated). B-Safe's technical guide says the minimum force needed to activate the shock absorber is 2 kN, so short falls or slides will not activate it, and that more than one shock absorber should not be connected at a time (manufacturer-stated).
