B-Safe Arresto-Lite Mini Self Retracting Lifeline, 2 m Webbing (BMIC02-130AT)
Available
The B-Safe Arresto-Lite mini self retracting lifeline, code BMIC02-130AT, is a 2 m retractable fall arrester with 21 mm Technora polyester webbing, a durable plastic casing, an inbuilt textile energy absorber and an aluminium triple action karabiner with a fall indicator (manufacturer-stated). B-Safe describes it as the lightest retractable inertia reel in the Arresto range, at under 600 g, with a rated capacity of 140 kg (manufacturer-stated).
B-Safe's data sheet says it meets EN 360:2002 and quotes AS/NZS 1891.3 clause 1.6, which accepts fall arrest devices complying with EN 360 for use in Australia and New Zealand (manufacturer-stated). Its stated tests are a static strength of 15 kN for 3 minutes and a dynamic test with a 100 kg mass in a 600 mm free fall, with a breaking force below 6 kN and an arrest distance under 2 m. It is also edge tested at 100 kg and approved where a fall over an edge is possible, and tested to 100 kg at fall factor 2 (manufacturer-stated).
The edge test was done at 100 kg, not at the 140 kg capacity. B-Safe's data sheet says the unit is not serviceable and must be removed from service if inspection finds unsafe operation or it has been in a fall, while the catalogue describes servicing by a height safety equipment inspector at intervals set by the manufacturer (manufacturer-stated). Ask AIMS which applies to the unit supplied.
B-Safe's manual gives the foot clearance needed below an inertia reel as total fall plus 1000 mm, where the total fall (free fall, activation and deceleration, 1.4 m maximum) has 250 mm added for harness stretch and slide (manufacturer-stated). Confirm the clearance for your own job before you choose a reel.
B-Safe's technical guide says to inspect fall protection equipment before each use, to check the date of manufacture and the remove from service date on the label, and to take any equipment that has been used to arrest a fall out of use and return it to the supplier for inspection and certification, or destroy it (manufacturer-stated).
Fall protection equipment must be selected, installed, used, inspected and maintained by trained people in line with the manufacturer's instructions and the relevant Australian Standards. Ask AIMS for the instructions and test certificates before you order, and never use it for any purpose other than the one it was made for.

Selecting the right option
Connect the lifeline end to the harness fall arrest attachment point and the top to an anchorage. Connect it to a full body harness that has a fall arrest attachment point, and to an anchorage that can take the load. B-Safe's technical guide says an anchorage for free fall arrest must withstand a minimum of 15 kN for one person and 21 kN for two (manufacturer-stated). B-Safe's manual says an inertia reel should be positioned as vertically as possible above the person's head to avoid a swing fall, and that a functional test is done before each use by pulling the webbing sharply (manufacturer-stated).
