B-Safe Twin Tail Shock Absorbing Lanyard, 2 m Kernmantle Rope (BL021222HD)

The B-Safe twin tail shock absorbing lanyard, code BL021222HD, is a 2 m lanyard made from 11 mm kernmantle rope. It has one double action snap hook at the harness end and a scaffold hook on each of its two tails (manufacturer-stated). B-Safe's catalogue lists it in its twin tail rope and wire lanyard range. A twin tail lets the wearer move between anchor points with one tail connected at all times.

B-Safe's catalogue gives a user weight range of 50 to 140 kg for its shock absorbing lanyards, and its catalogue says they are made to AS 1891.5 and reduce forces in a free fall arrest to below 6 kN (manufacturer-stated). B-Safe's technical guide says the shock absorber end must be attached to a fall arrest attachment point on the harness, that the legs must never be attached to any part of the harness, and that either or both tails must be attached to an anchorage at all times (manufacturer-stated).

B-Safe's technical guide gives the foot clearance needed below a shock absorbing lanyard as free fall plus shock absorber extension plus a standard 1000 mm safety clearance, with 250 mm added for harness slippage. It lists shock absorber extension as 300 mm for a 600 mm free fall, 500 mm for 1000 mm, 600 mm for 1500 mm and 900 mm for 2000 mm, and says the maximum free fall before the shock absorber activates is 2 m (manufacturer-stated). Confirm the clearance for your own job before you choose a lanyard.

B-Safe's technical guide says to inspect fall protection equipment before each use, to check the date of manufacture and the remove from service date on the label, and to take any equipment that has been used to arrest a fall out of use and return it to the supplier for inspection and certification, or destroy it (manufacturer-stated).

Fall protection equipment must be selected, installed, used, inspected and maintained by trained people in line with the manufacturer's instructions and the relevant Australian Standards. Ask AIMS for the instructions and test certificates before you order, and never use it for any purpose other than the one it was made for.

Selecting the right option

Use the lanyard with a full body harness and connect the shock absorber end to a fall arrest point on the harness. Connect it to a full body harness that has a fall arrest attachment point, and to an anchorage that can take the load. B-Safe's technical guide says an anchorage for free fall arrest must withstand a minimum of 15 kN for one person and 21 kN for two (manufacturer-stated). Do not use more than one shock absorber at a time, as B-Safe says this increases the shock on the body above 6 kN (manufacturer-stated).
