Choosing a band saw blade

Start with your machine: the blade length, width and thickness must match it. Then choose the TPI (teeth per inch) for the section you are cutting. As a rule of thumb, you want at least three teeth in the cut at all times, so use a finer pitch for thin wall, tube and small sections and a coarser pitch for large solid sections. Variable pitch blades, such as 3/4 or 4/6 TPI, run from a coarser to a finer pitch in the one blade. Excision lists M42, M51 and Master Supreme grades, so check the data sheet for the grade that suits your material and machine. Always check the data sheet.

Band Saw Blade FAQs

How do I choose the right TPI?

Match the pitch to the section. Use a finer pitch for thin wall, tube and small sections and a coarser pitch for thick or solid material, keeping at least three teeth in the cut. Variable pitch blades such as 3/4 or 4/6 TPI suit mixed sections.

How do I read the blade size in the title?

The size is written as width x thickness x TPI in millimetres, for example 27 x 0.9 x 4/6 TPI is 27 mm wide, 0.9 mm thick with a variable 4 to 6 teeth per inch. Where a listing shows a length range, such as 685 to 1685 mm, choose the exact length from the variant list.

What length of blade do I need?

Check the blade length in your machine's manual or measure the old blade. If you cannot find it, call us on (02) 9773 0122 and we will help match it.
