The Sutton T697 is a spiral point (gun) tap (VA PM designation) for UNC threads, made from powder metallurgy, vanadium grade high speed steel (PM-HSSE V3) with a TiCN coating. This listing covers 9 sizes from #2 x 56 TPI to 5/8 x 11 TPI.
The gun (spiral point) nose curls the chip forward, ahead of the tap and out of the hole, so chip clogging is avoided and coolant can flow without problems. It suits through holes. The VA PM designation is for stainless and tough steels, with the VA geometry in powder metal high speed steel. The chamfer is Form B (4.5 x P), for through holes in medium and long chipping materials.
The thread tolerance is 2BX. The tap is built to DIN 2184-1.

Design features
- Powder metallurgy, vanadium grade high speed steel (PM-HSSE V3). The very fine and uniform grain structure allows high hardness while keeping good toughness, for materials up to 40 HRC and difficult-to-machine materials such as stainless steels.
- TiCN coating for abrasive materials such as cast iron and aluminium alloys, and adhesive materials such as copper and copper-based alloys.
- 3 to 4 flutes, depending on size.
