Sutton #0 Morse Taper Socket Reamer - Roughing - HSS
Available
The Sutton R106 is the roughing Morse taper socket reamer. It opens out an existing parallel hole to a Morse taper, and it is the rougher in the roughing and finishing pair. It is used by hand with a suitable wrench, suits tool rooms and workshops, and is HSS with a bright finish (uncoated and polished) and 7° left-hand flutes.
There are six sizes, one for each Morse taper from MT0 to MT5, with 6 to 10 flutes (6 on MT0 to MT1, 8 on MT2 to MT3 and 10 on MT4 to MT5). The table below gives the gauge diameter for each taper alongside the reamer dimensions: the small-end diameter (d1) and large-end diameter (d3) of the flutes, the shank diameter (d2), overall length (l1) and flute length (l2).
Where this product is used
- Opening out existing parallel holes to form a Morse taper socket.
- Tool rooms and workshops, used by hand with a suitable wrench.
Roughing and finishing: the two-step approach
The Morse taper socket reamers are a roughing and finishing pair. The R106 roughing reamer opens out the existing parallel hole; the R107 Morse taper socket reamer (finishing) finishing reamer follows for the final sizing. In the catalogue illustrations the roughing R106 has interrupted (notched) flutes and the finishing R107 has continuous flutes. The two ranges carry the same listed dimensions, so you order the matching taper number in each.

Getting a clean taper
- Lubricate generously. A lack of lubricant causes tool wear and a poor finish, and the fix is to increase the supply. Straight cutting oil is the usual choice in reaming, because the aim is finish rather than cooling.
- Start with a good hole. A badly drilled hole is listed against all four problems (breakage, wear, chatter and poor finish) and the fix is to replace the drill.
- Keep it aligned and rigid. Misalignment causes breakage and wear (fix: align the holes) and lack of rigidity causes breakage and chatter (fix: improve rigidity).
- Don't force it. Entering the work too fast is listed against breakage and chatter, and the fix is a slower approach feed.
