SY 40-2 SS Stainless Steel ASA Duplex Roller Chain Offset Link (Half Link)

SY offset links (half links) let a length of stainless steel ASA duplex roller chain be made up with an odd number of pitches. Each size here matches the SY chain of the same number, so select the link with the same chain number, strand count and series as your chain.

Made in Japan by Sugiyama Chain Co., Ltd. AIMS Industrial supplies these links individually. This listing covers 2 sizes (40 to 60). Where possible, choose a chain length with an even number of pitches so that no offset link is needed.

Selecting the right option

For ASA (ANSI) chain the number is the pitch in eighths of an inch: 40 is 4/8 in (1/2 in), 60 is 6/8 in (3/4 in), 100 is 10/8 in (1-1/4 in). The figure after the dash is the number of strands.

Choose stainless steel where corrosion or temperature rules out carbon steel. The table lists maximum allowable load only, so size the chain on that figure rather than on a carbon steel tensile strength. Sugiyama can supply 316 and 600 stainless on request.

Fitting and use

An offset link is handy where the chain needs an odd number of pitches, but Sugiyama notes it is at least 35% lower in fatigue strength than the chain itself and recommends against it where frequent impact loads at high speed are involved. A two-pitch offset link is available for that duty.

Stainless steel chain is supplied unlubricated. Sugiyama recommends lubricating it before use, except where it is exposed to water, because it can show articulation problems early on if run dry.

Sugiyama states the elastic limit of stainless steel chain is 30% of its tensile strength, so never load it beyond the maximum allowable load.

Chain drives should be guarded. Lock out machine power before removing, installing or servicing chain, wear eye protection when driving or grinding pins, avoid welding or plating assembled chain, and never repair damaged chain by replacing only some of its parts.
