Abrasive Roll Selection — Quick Reference
Abrasive rolls = continuous-length abrasive material supplied on roll — torn/cut to required length for hand finishing + lathe polishing + file backing + general metalworking surface prep. Used across engineering + maintenance + fabrication + automotive.
| Abrasive Roll Type | Best For | Common Grits |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminium Oxide Cloth Roll (J-Weight) | General workshop + flexible cloth-backed | 40 / 60 / 80 / 120 / 180 / 240 |
| Aluminium Oxide Paper Roll (Lighter) | Lighter applications + hand sanding | 60-400 grit |
| Silicon Carbide Roll (Black) | Non-ferrous + cast iron + stone — wet/dry | 60-1000 grit |
| Emery Cloth Roll (Traditional) | Hand metalwork polishing — workshop classic | Various grits |
| Zirconia Alumina Roll | Heavy stock removal — steel + stainless | 40-120 grit |
| Non-Woven Roll (Surface Conditioning) | Blending + finishing + brushed look on SS | Coarse / medium / fine / very fine |
| Stearate-Coated Roll | Reduces loading on soft/painted surfaces | 120-400 |
| 50mm × 50m Standard Roll | Workshop default — narrow cloth strip | Per grit |
| 100mm × 50m Wide Roll | Wider surface finishing applications | Per grit |
Critical: Match abrasive + grit to material + finish required. J-weight cloth = flexible for hand contoured work; heavier cloth = belt + production. Tear strip to needed length — no waste. Brands: Pferd, Klingspor, Norton, Flexovit. Companion: all abrasives, sanding belts, sanding sheets, flap discs.
Surface Finish and Deburr Metal with Professional Abrasive Rolls
Abrasive rolls are continuous-length abrasive material supplied on a roll — torn or cut to the required length for hand-finishing, lathe polishing, file-backing and general metalworking surface preparation.
Abrasive rolls are used across engineering, maintenance, fabrication and automotive workshops for deburring cut edges, smoothing weld beads, removing surface rust and scale, and progressively refining surface finish on turned, milled or ground components — leading abrasive and surface finishing brands supplying the engineering, manufacturing and maintenance trades across Australia.
The Abrasive Rolls Range
Our 13-product range covers emery cloth and aluminium oxide abrasive rolls in a variety of grit grades and roll widths for metalworking and general finishing applications.
- Pferd: Pferd supplies abrasive roll products as part of their comprehensive abrasive and surface finishing range. Pferd is a German precision abrasives manufacturer with over 150 years of experience producing grinding, filing and finishing tools for the metalworking trades.
- Norton: Norton supplies abrasive rolls covering a range of grit grades for metalworking and general industrial surface preparation. Norton is one of the world’s largest abrasive manufacturers, producing coated abrasives, bonded abrasives and related surface finishing products for industrial and trade applications.

Choosing the Right Abrasive Roll
Abrasive roll selection depends on the abrasive type, the grit grade and the application — whether deburring, rust removal or progressive surface finishing.
- Emery Cloth vs Aluminium Oxide: Emery cloth (corundum and magnetite abrasive on a cloth backing) is the traditional choice for lathe polishing and hand-finishing of metal. Aluminium oxide abrasive rolls are sharper-cutting and longer-lasting for more aggressive material removal and surface preparation.
- Grit Grade: Coarser grits (40–80) remove material quickly and suit initial surface preparation and rust removal. Medium grits (120–180) provide a good working surface and are used for most general metalworking finishing. Fine grits (240+) are used for final surface refinement before polishing.
