Sanding Hand Pads and Sponges for Australian Detail Finishing

Sanding hand pads and sponges are the flexible abrasive consumables for the work power tools can't reach — corners, contours, finished surfaces, and anywhere a hand-controlled abrasive is the right answer. From woodwork finishing through to metal surface conditioning and paint preparation, the right hand pad or sponge produces results that orbital and rotary tools can't match. AIMS Industrial supplies sanding hand pads and sponges in the abrasive types and grits Australian trade and industrial users need.

The hand pad and sponge types we stock

  • Non-woven abrasive pads (Scotch-Brite-style) — synthetic fibre pads impregnated with abrasive grit; for surface conditioning and finishing
  • Sanding sponges — flexible foam blocks coated with abrasive; conform to contours and curves
  • Coated abrasive sheets and rolls — paper or cloth-backed abrasive for hand-cut sheets
  • Wet-and-dry sanding paper — for fine finishing on paint, automotive, and woodwork
  • Detail abrasive strips and points — for the smallest detail finishing

Non-woven abrasive pads — why they earn their place

Non-woven abrasive pads (Scotch-Brite-style) are the workshop favourite for surface conditioning, paint stripping, rust removal, and finishing where a coated abrasive would be too aggressive or leave swirl marks. The synthetic fibre construction with embedded grit produces a controlled, even cut that follows surface contour without gouging. Common grades include:

  • Coarse (grey/maroon) — heavy paint and rust removal, surface preparation
  • Medium (red/maroon) — general surface conditioning, finish blending
  • Fine (grey/grey) — fine finishing, polishing preparation, decorative finishing
  • Very fine (white) — final finishing, satin finishes

Where hand pads and sponges earn their place

  • Detail finishing on woodwork — corners, mouldings, and curved surfaces where orbital sanders can't follow
  • Paint and rust preparation on metalwork — surface conditioning before coating or welding
  • Stainless steel finishing — producing satin and brushed finishes on fabricated stainless
  • Furniture finishing and restoration — between-coat sanding on lacquered and varnished work
  • Mould and pattern finishing — final hand work on machined or moulded surfaces

Wet-and-dry sanding

Wet-and-dry abrasive paper uses water (or a light cutting fluid) as a lubricant and dust suppressant during fine finishing. Common grits range from 240 through 2500. Used dry, the abrasive clogs quickly with the material being sanded; used wet, the water carries away the swarf and produces a much finer finish. Standard for automotive paint preparation, fine wood finishing, and metal polishing.

Brands stocked at AIMS

Norton, Pferd, Klingspor, and Flexovit cover the hand abrasive range across non-woven pads, sponges, sheets, and rolls. The Scotch-Brite branded range from approved suppliers covers the non-woven pad standard. For specific specialty applications, additional brands are sourced through our distribution channels.
