Abrasive Sharpening Stones — Bench & Hand Honing Stones

Sharpening and honing stones restore cutting edges on tools, knives, chisels, and precision cutting instruments. AIMS Industrial sells sharpening and honing stones — aluminium oxide, silicon carbide, Arkansas (novaculite), and diamond-coated stones in bench and hand configurations for workshop tool sharpening, blade maintenance, and precision deburring applications.

Sharpening Stones We Stock

• Aluminium Oxide Bench Stones: Aluminium oxide (corundum) bench sharpening stones in coarse (80–120 grit) and medium (180–220 grit) grades — for initial edge establishment on very dull or nicked tools, and general-purpose tool sharpening. Harder and more durable than natural stones for high-volume workshop sharpening.
• Silicon Carbide Bench Stones: Silicon carbide (Crystolon) bench stones in coarse and fine grades — cutting faster than aluminium oxide on hard steels and tungsten carbide tooling. Used for initial sharpening of carbide tools, scrapers, and hardened steel turning tools.
• Arkansas (Novaculite) Stones: Natural Arkansas stones in soft (medium), hard, and translucent grades for fine to ultra-fine edge finishing — a traditional premium honing medium for knives, chisels, and precision cutting edges that require a polished final edge for clean cutting in wood and soft materials.
• Diamond Sharpening Stones: Monocrystalline and polycrystalline diamond sharpening stones for the fastest material removal on carbide tools, ceramic knives, and HSS tools — diamond abrasive cuts all hard materials where conventional stones cut too slowly. Available in coarse (220 grit), fine (400 grit), and extra-fine (600–1200 grit).
• Slip & Gouge Stones: Tapered slip stones, gouge stones, and shaped honing stones for sharpening curved cutting tools — gouges, chisels, carving tools, and profile cutters that cannot be sharpened on a flat bench stone.

Sharpening Stone Selection Guide

• Grit Sequence: Start with the coarsest grit needed to remove damage and establish the correct bevel, then progress through finer grits to refine and polish the edge. Skipping grits leaves deeper scratches that the finer grits must remove. For maintenance sharpening of lightly dull tools, start with medium grit directly.
• Lubrication: Oil stones require honing oil (light mineral oil); water stones require water as lubricant. Dry use clogs the stone with metal particles and degrades cutting performance. Diamond stones can be used dry or with water. Clean stones after use to remove metal swarf from the stone surface.
• Holding the Bevel Angle: Consistent bevel angle is the key to effective sharpening — a guided sharpening jig or honing guide ensures the correct angle is maintained throughout the stroke. Freehand sharpening requires practice to maintain the angle consistently across the full stone.
