Selecting the right air hose for the application requires matching the working pressure, bore diameter, flexibility requirement and environmental conditions to the hose construction and material. Using an undersized or underrated hose causes pressure drop, restricts tool performance and creates a safety hazard if the hose fails under pressure.

PVC Air Hose

PVC air hose is the most widely used workshop air hose — lightweight, flexible at ambient temperatures and cost-effective for general workshop and light industrial use. Reinforced PVC hose with a braided or spiral synthetic fibre reinforcement layer handles working pressures up to 20 bar, suiting the output pressure of most workshop and light industrial compressors. PVC hose is available in standard ID sizes of 6mm, 8mm and 10mm (ID) and is supplied in coils and cut lengths. One limitation of PVC hose is reduced flexibility in cold conditions — at temperatures below approximately 10°C, PVC hose becomes noticeably stiffer.

Rubber Air Hose

Rubber air hose remains flexible in cold weather and provides superior resistance to oil, fuel, ozone and UV exposure compared to PVC. It is the preferred choice for outdoor use, industrial environments with chemical or oil contamination, and applications involving high-temperature compressed air such as pneumatic tools used near welding and hot-work areas. Rubber hose handles higher working pressures and resists damage from kinking, crushing and abrasion better than PVC. Available in standard workshop sizes and in heavy-wall industrial grades for demanding site applications.

Polyurethane (PU) Air Hose

Polyurethane air hose combines light weight with excellent cold-weather flexibility and good abrasion resistance. PU hose is the standard choice for coiled air hose assemblies used with pneumatic tools on assembly lines and in workshops where hose management and self-retraction are important. It is also popular in food processing and pharmaceutical applications where hose cleanliness and surface hygiene are priorities.

Fittings Compatibility and Sizing

Most workshop air hose in Australia is fitted with BSP (British Standard Pipe) threaded fittings and quick-connect couplings in the standard industrial format. AIMS stocks air hose assemblies with fittings already attached and plain hose in bulk for cut-to-length workshop plumbing applications. Matching the hose ID to the air flow requirement is important — a 6mm ID hose is adequate for blow guns and low-consumption tools but restricts flow to high-consumption equipment like impact wrenches and needle scalers.
